Reasonable price service and cambelt change?

Hi, i have just booked my car in for a service and cambelt change at a main Skoda dealer.

I discussed what the approx cost would be and was quoted approx £575. :eek:

Anyway i booked it in as it needs a service according to the trip computer and service book at 54,000 miles.

It has just reached this so i thought i may aswel get the cambelt changed at the same time.

My car is a mk1 02 plate vRS which has been serviced around every 10,000 miles since new, so the previous owner had it on the fixed serviced schedule.

I was told it would need pretty much a full service this time around incuding brake fluid, pollen filter e.t.c....

So is £575 an average price to pay for this work from a main dealer or not?

Also is the water pump automatically inspected whilst changing the cambelt or do you have to ask in advance?:confused:

don't no about round ur way but here in the manchester parkside skoda will change cambelt for £295 inc vat and service for £180 and thats on a mk1 octy vrs intermittant service but the full major service too.i think awesome in manchester (not main dealer skoda, thread on this site) will do cam for £295 inc vat and metal waterpump and service for bout £150-180.is it worth getting the car serviced at a main dealer coz the price has gone outta the 2nd hand car market and reselling wont recover the costs.u might get £200-300 more for skoda serviced car, on a trade in book price either way.

I've had an official quote for £330 for a cambelt change from a main dealer (I say official as I'm paying mates rates but I'm not saying where as I don't want to get anyone into trouble!). They weren't going to do the water pump at the same time until I asked but when I did they said it wouldn't cost any extra labour just parts. I've ordered the pump with the metal impeller today from Awesome £34 posted.

So £245 on top of that Skoda price for a ful service is about right I would have thought. I'm sure you'll be able to get cheaper from an inde but it depends if you want to keep up that full Skoda service history.

£575 is a bit steep, it cost me £125ish for parts (inc plastic water pump) took a few hours but as far as cambelts go theyre not too bad. it may be worth getting genuine parts and going to an independant??

Just had a full service & cambelt done at a main dealer in colchester & paid just over what you have been qouted so seems like a good price to me.

They told me they always check the water pump when the cambelt is changed,my car has done 65,000 miles & was fine.

not sure about the price if its just for the cambelt, rollers, pulleys(i think thats what they are called), VAT and labour, im sure you'll be able to get it cheaper else where.

I thought it was normal practice to change the water pump at the same time as the cambelt?

My mates gonna be paying about £430 for a cambelt change and major service on his 04 Corolla diesel.

Don't think they'll be changing the waterpump though.

Had full fixed service and cambelt changed on Monday, cost:- £574! :eek:

I knew it was going to be expensive as this is around the price i was previously quoted.

I'm still surprised they didn't change the water pump but they asured me it was checked and fine so did not need changing.

This was at my local Stealers so i'm confident they did a good job but i'm bloody sure my engine is louder than it was before on tickover.

Have inspected everything under the bonnet with a torch and there is nothing loose.

It's almost as if the tappets are slightly louder or there is a faint churning from the cambelt area.

Is this normal for a car that has just had an oil change or a new cambelt? :confused:

When was the last time the cam belt was changed before this (year and mileage)?

I am very surprised Skoda did not put a new water pump in considering the amount that have broken up causing engine failure!

So how did they inspect it? they would need to drain the coolant and take the pump out, so why didn't they just pop a new one in while they were at it!!?

AIUI VAG do not recognise a problem with waterpump failure. In any event, IME the ones that have provably failed (as opposed to possibly failed and possibly been broken during removal) have stripped the drive splines on the impellor somewhere in the 80_000s, so with current recommendations on cambelt changes the pump might need changing every second belt.

Also, you don't need to do a full coolant drain to remove the pump.

My first post here. I've recently become the owner of a 56 plate Octavia Elegance, 1.9 Tdi PD. In line with the service schedule, I had the cambelt, tensioners & waterpump replaced today.

I also had a full service, oil & filter plus all other filters, fuel, air & pollen and all for £300. Including the car being washed!

I've used this mechanic for years now, and wouldn't trust my cars to anyone else.

My first Skoda, and I must say, it's a cracking car. Don't know why I didn't buy one years ago!

Hi folks just a novice Skoda owner , Re the guy who's car was louder could this be the belt been tighter and hence making the timing spot on rather than lagging ? 

 

I need my belt changing soon , didn't know the water pump should be checked at the same time , thanks for tip .

The belt often outlasts the pump, if the pump is still ok a new tensioned belt will probably finish it off anyway, the plastic impellers get brittle.

Cheers Ken , I have a ALH engine 1st registered 06/02 which means acc to log book the cambelt only needs changing every 100k miles , it was last done at 59k miles in 07 , do I keep driving till 159 k ? 

I wouldn't. And I'm not Ken, Nevermind. Best before for a cambelt is 4-6 years, pretty much regardless of mileage, don't think I'd be looking to do 100,000 miles on a cambelt, whatever the engine type. The book for my 1.8t recommends similar but vw say 5 years or 50k whichever comes first. I'd get it done for peace of mind. I do mine on 4 years or 35-40k. It's cheaper than the worst case scenario.

I am he, I am Ken, and I still have the same car (for 9 years now).

 

The actual recommendation I've seen from 02 reg onwards is 100_000 miles and then every 60_000.

 

So in this case with the change at 59k, the next should be 119k.

130 in parts and replaced them by myself

Thanks for comments , my local mechanic says that every 1.9 TDI VW cam belt he has changed looked as if it had a lot more miles left in it as they are over engineered he reckons . I am going to change it soon , like Ken says it is due at 119 k miles and it is on 117 k now . 

 

Re oil the 505.1 VW spec , where can you get the cheapest ? I hear Mobil has that Spec and is cheaper than Platinum Quantum .

I dunno what oil prices are like down your way, but I'll happily use Mobil oils in my cars. Opie Oils (site sponsors' section) are reasonably priced and reliable.
