So the story goes that we never got a tax book with our car. However it does still have the chassis and VIN plates still intact. So we thought a trip to the registration office would proove successful and they would be able to tell us with the information from these plates what year the car is. But no, they won't. They know what it is but they won't tell us unless we apply for a new tax book and registration at the cost of 25quid. Basically we dont want to do that. I know for classic minis there is a website that you can check the Vin numbers and get the age of the car, so im just wondering is there a similar place for skodas.

I can tell you the build year from the VIN number, but not the exact date. Skofast may be able to help with the exact build date? Usually DVLA are more interested in the date of first use rather than the date the car was built.

I'm not sure how long car manufacturers have been date marking individual components in cars, but usually interior mouldings in particular will give you a good idea of when a car was put together in the factory. This may apply to post-VW Skodas, worth a try?

Usually a Haynes manual or original Skoda workshop manual will tell you.

If it is the car in your rebuild thread, my guess, judging by the original colour and amount of corroson is that it was built in 1986 and first registered on 6th March 1987. The original owner was most likely called Albert and was a pensioner
