Havoline 5W30 poured in Fabia 1.9tdi

Featured Replies

Hiy,

I got my fabia (2001, 81k) serviced a few days ago and what suprised me is the oil that had been poured in the engine - texaco havoline 5w30. The mechanic told me that this oil is recomended for fabia 1.9tdi in his oil guide. I've got no idea what oil had been used before, the only thing I know is engin oil pd 10w50 when the car got 12k on the clock.

My manual says 505.01 and I found out some people use 10w40.

I just feel there's something wrong about it, should I change it?

Regards,

simon

Should use 5w 40 505.01 spec only. :)

Ask him to show that "guide" as it is clearly not endorsed by VW who make the engines.

reading online, that oil doesnt conform to 505.01 spec, personally id ask him to change it

Quite a few oil guides say 505.00 is suitable for PD engines, and clearly it isn't. Oil must be 505.01 due to the PD injector rocker pressures.

The mechanic probably thought the engine was a non turbo model, the SDI. Yes I would insist he changed it.

Texaco make a oil that is 505.01 specific called Texaco Havoline 505.01 so check this is the oil that your mechanic used.

Cheers guys,

In this case im gonna change it myself, I suppose the mechanic has got an agreement with havoline so he pours havoline, you can't trust mechanics these days.

so which oil should I buy?

fabia 2001, 81k, 1.9 tdi 74kW,

What I've found is Castrol Edge 5w40 that is recommended but expensive, anything cheaper?

Should I pay attention to these numbers 5w40, 10w40 etc?

Initially it was 10w50, can i swap it for 5w40?

Regards,

Simon

Your local TPS (trade parts specialist) might have a good deal still on the Quantum Platinum 5w 40 505.01. I paid about £17 for a 5 litre pot. :)

The only problem with Castrol stuff is it come in 4 litre bottles and you need more than that for an oil change. If you can find it, I buy Millers XFE-PD which is good stuff. There is a list of oils suitable for the Fabia Diesel in the sticky thread. Make sure it is VW 505.01 spec and is 5W40 grade.

You can also order oils from Opie oils from here (Briskoda members get a discount rate), see link in Briskoda Partners section.

Thanks a lot,

It seems to me I'll have to look around.
