Felicia creaking rear suspension (left side only)

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I acquired a 2000 Felicia (with only 40k on the clock ... old punters car i think) quite recently.

Now i've noticed a creaking coming from the left rear suspension.

It creaks very lightly, but constantly when driving ... with a louder creak when you go over bumps.

If you put your hands on the boot sill, or on the roof, and rock / bounce the car, you can hear it too.

Is this likely to be the 'rear suspension bushes' ... which probably just need lubricating - ?

Or does anyone have any experience of this sound being connected to anything more serious?

Any advice (before i go to the garage and they rebuild / change the entire suspension) would be gratefully recieved.

I know a bit about cars, but not that much.

Thanks.

I'd think it's most likely to be the bushes; try a few strategically placed dabs of brake fluid on pivot bushes (include the eyebush on the bottom of the damper, but not the top mount).

brake fluid - ?

Aren't there actual products for lubricating suspension components - ? Or are they one of those things that are only available to 'the trade' - ?

- having done a google search, what seems to come up are silicon based lubricants for grown ups who love each other very much.

edito ... i've found general purpose silicone grease ... for easing / lubricating rubber parts ... might that do the trick ... >?

Yes brake fluid. I, and several of my mechanic mates have been there, done that, got the tee-shirt, and more than once each.

There isn't actually a product for lubricating dry rubber bushes; the closest things are brake fluid, and the results of your web search!

Alrighty then! Thanks, brake fluid ain't expensive, so i'll give it a go. If no joy, i guess my (trusty, as far as i know) local mechanic will have to have a look at it.

It's been an eye opening search though.

I'd never known there were so many lubricants for so many different ..... purposes.

I wonder if silicone oil would be acceptable too? Supposed to be compatible with rubber etc.

I wouldnt use brake fluid, unless it is silicone based. There is a product called Rubber lube, that is used in the auto industry, it is like a grease, but does not attack the rubber
