Fixed flange towbar - which one for no cutout?

Featured Replies

Hi

Do you have a flange type towbar on your Superb and no cutout in the bumper? If yes, let me know the brand.

I decided to fit a fixed flange towbar and mount a towbar carrier plate to it permanently.

However, I want to get a towbar that does not require bumper cover cutout.

Westfalia is normally a sure bet, but does not make any flanged ones, so I am currently looking at PCT and Witter. I blacklisted Brink for the previous (detachable) towbar, because they said no cutout would be required, and in reality 2in cutout was needed.

Both PCT and Witter state that no cutout is required, but I'd feel more certain if someone could confirm that.

Also, do you have any problems with parking sensors and the towball installed? Without towball?

I put a Bosal towbar on my Superb (bought a Passat one cheap on eBay) which fits perfectly without any cutting of the bumper skin.

What's the point in using a towbar with a flange unless you need to change the fitting? It's just ugly, crude engineering - the forged swan-neck ball end is stronger, lighter and neater.

Rotodiesel, I agreee with the engineering view, but the practical point is explained on the "Easter drivers" thread, illustrated with example of what happens if you do not have the said towbar flange and have to brake suddenly in city

Actually, I use towbar only to attach a towbar carrier, or in other words a box. This actually attaches much better to a flanged towball mount, I just need to put a ~150mm x ~100mm x 7mm steel plate fitting my carrier mount instead of towball.

So, after my car is repaired, I'll have the 6in x 4in x 7mm steel ram at the back of the car waiting at all times for the next car that decides to drive into mine....Which happened 2 times so far in my driving history, in both cases I was forced to brake suddenly by another driver and had no room to escape.

Thanks for info on Bosal, I can't find actual picture anywhere (on Ebay there's only a generic picture plus they're 30% more expensive than PCT ones)

Anyway, do you have any trouble with parking sensors when the towball is on (if you have parking sensors)? I know that even when I had detachable Brink towbar+neck only, it would not be noticed (sensors on Superb are quite high). I intend to mount the carrier closer to the car now and slightly lower, so my hope is that when the carrier is off the entire plate will be overlooked by the sensors.

I had a towsure one on mine and that didn't have a cutout......was an awful lot of metal to fit ...there's a thread somewhere

I have a Brink tow bar on mine and have no problems with the sensors. When the grey caravan plug is in the sensors switch off.
