When is my air con on or off ECON mode?

Featured Replies

Okay thid may be a bit of stupid question but ive only had my car a week.

When is the air con on and off?

Econ mode?

Auto?

Why cant it just have an air con on and off button

I am gettin crappy millage as it is dont want the air con sapping more petrol aswell

Econ is just the blowers going with no air con as such

Auto is the blowers going with air con

What milage areyou gettin and what type of driving is it ???

I find air con on make virtually no difference at all.

getting around 25-28 around town. I only do about 15 miles a day to work and back and thats in traffic.

Just so i know and can compare the difference.

Thanks for that.

Sounds about right too me. The only way too get more is literally drive miss daisy:D

As Fatty says, swapping between Auto and Econ mode makes next to no difference to the fuel consumption (based on selecting instantaneous mpg mode on the trip computer, and switching Climatronic mode at steady speed). Literally, we're talking 1/10th of a mile per gallon, so about 0.3% on your quoted figures.

What you might not have realised is that your car has Climatronic, which is a full climate control system that will use the heating and air conditioning systems intelligently to achieve the selected interior temperature, and not just an air conditioning system that does nothing except blow cold air, so it's probably not doing that much chilling anyway.

Right i understand. Thought it might be low cos i had the air con all the time. blimey 25 MPG should have bought an Impreza;))))

Top notch car though

Cheers

Your never going to get decent mpg figures if your doing short trips around town, because your engine will probably be cold and most of the driving will be low speed stop start stuff. So it's pointless worrying about that. 25mpg around town seems good to me anyway! Whatever it is, it's going to be better than a thirsty Impreza!

I've seen 41mpg max on a motorway run, and my average is about 34-35mpg on a trip. My mate has an '04 Impreza WRX and the best he can manage on a motorway run is 25mpg.

Fear not, you made the right choice in the octy!

If you want to turn the climatronic off completely then keep pressing the "fans down" button until the display shows OFF.

Oh yeah I forgot about that bit lol

Lol i got about 8mpg out of my old impreza once....

Yeah as above.... When the car is in ECON then the air con compressor is off.... if it says AUTO thats when its using its own brain to get to a temp using blowers and air con. When That section is blank then its using your settings and your Compressor is more than likey to be on!!!

Correct. If the blower fan is on, then air conditioning is operating in manual mode. I always check that the display shows ECON if I want the air conditioning off - which is most of the time.

thanks

good forum this :)))

A decent automotive aircon system (which the VAG one is) acts as a dehumidifier in damp conditions, as well as being an air chiller; you'd probably have fewer issues with misting and interior dampness if you used AUTO more.

When its on it should idle at a 1-200 more rpm, you should here it kick in when you turn it on.

It defo uses more fuel, at least 3-4mpg on a run.

Sounds like there's something wrong with your idle stabilisation control; ok it's a TDi, but mine idles at a steady 850 regardless of whether the Climatronic is full off or running in "demand chill".

Also, as hinted at earlier, the air con isn't normally running flat strap in AUTO unless it's trying to chill down a hot interior. Ok, that's more likely in the "Deep South" ;) than up here, but I don't believe it should run flat out for more than 2 or 3 miles except on a Summer day.

Sounds odd!

My idle revs stay the same if I switch it on or off (I got bored waiting for the mrs yesterday so turned it on and off a few times to see what happened!), and I've never seen any mpg difference.

Do you have Climatronic or Aircon?

I notice it does blip ever so slightly, on econ the car makes the dog bone mount rattle, but on auto it's nice and smooth.

I notice it does blip ever so slightly

I get that too, a click as the compressor kicks in and the revs drop marginally for a second before rising to normal idle.

When i put mine on you can hear some fans kick in. It sounds like a very minor scraping noise. Is this normal? It doesn't seem to be that cold so im going to get it re gassed soon i think.

The air con spins both radiator fans gently, and the ventilation fan (sometimes not so gently ;) ), so a gentle scraping noise might be the compressor, or more likely a fan just and no more catching on a shroud. Check that the compressor pulley nut is tight (if it's not this is very urgent), and look for a burr on the ends of the radiator fan blades. If those are both okay, then the regas is urgent

Since I bought mine new in March 06, it's been on auto at 19 degrees celcius. I can honestly say it has never been off that setting other than in the depths of winter, where I may have gone crazy and bumped it up to 21 degrees:eek:

I seem to do okay with fuel consuption and the system , even though quite an old design, works very well.

I rarely do anything else other than "demand demist" either.
