Help! VRS TDI full of petrol!

Featured Replies

Unfortunately the misses just filled our VRS PD with petrol. We're going away for the weekend so can't do anything till Monday. Has anyone got any advice before I contact Skoda!? Is it as serious a job as people say?

Thanks in advance

Paul

Has the car been driven ?? Do you have AA / RAC ??

Nightmare!!!.... From what i understand, if its been driven its a hell of a job, but if not its as simple as getting the tank drained.

Oh bugger

NEVER START CAR nor put ignition to position 2 as this will start the primer pump and run the petrol through the lines to the PD pump making repairs more time consuming and costly..

Any competant garage will be able to drain and flush the system and replace filters.

Bit late now but invest in one of those anti mis fuelling caps which fit the tank inlet.

I did the same thing with my 106 deisel a couple of years ago. Fortunately I had only put a bit in, but I did drive it for a while before it passed out. I filled it all the way with deisel and it was fine.

I should imagine the petrol has to be syphoned/pumped out for a start. Get rid of as much as you can. Fill it all the way with deisel and I should imagine it will be ok.

Good luck.

from reading the other thread, the best advice would appear to be

1 - get the petrol out as soon as possible

2 - change the fuel filter and fill it with diesel before refitting

3 - fill up with diesel and get it running again

4 - put some decent additivies into the fuel for the next few months...

Good luck mate!

Filled my old PD130 with 50% petrol and drove until stalling (about 100m). It was fine after flushing and a new fuel filter. The old Pumpe Duese engines are pretty tough. I was told that you would be screwed with a CR as the fuel pump is much higher pressure. Hope it works out for you!

The AA have a specific unit to offer 'roadside' drainage including fuel filter replacement. It was on trial a couple of years ago but it must be in place by now.

DON'T START IT!!!!

Get it towed to somewhere where they can drain and clean the tanks and filters and you should be fine.

And never, ever, ever let the missus drive it ever again!!

DO NOT TELL SKODA , do not know how old the car is but they may look at this as invalidating any warrenty . as said before do not turn on ignition , drain as much as possible out , replace filter ,fill with diesel , run diesel cleaner/addative , replace filter again in about 1000 miles. been there done that on a renault, ran for 80,000 more miles before I got rid of it.

drain all, or at least 3/4 of the petrol out of the tank.fill up with diesel. the engine can cope with petrol but not pure petrol. the AA were U/S when my wife did it a few years ago and wanted to charge her over a hundred pounds. that wasnt including an extra charge for getting rid of the petrol. packed up with the AA. never to return. mike

I was under the impression that PD unit injectors where lubricated by engine oil as there driven off the cam shaft and thus aren't lubricated by fuel, therefore petrol not being too much of a problem

I may be wrong, misinformed or only know half the story though :P

Wot E Said !! :)

I hope she realized before starting and you were able to tow it onto a transporter or something !!

Best of luck with it,

Women , Just coz de can't pee standing up !! :P

There is too much misinformation about petrol in diesel!

The real problem engines are that CR engines that have a high pressure pump feeding the rail - these often dont like petrol in them.

But PD engines are tough old boots. The lift pump is just a simple low pressure electric pump - probably basically the same unit found in a lot of VAG low tech petrol engines. The unit injectors are driven off the camshaft which is externally lubricated. Once petrol gets as far as the injector nozzle, the engine will just stop, as diesel engines just dont run on petrol.

Its a question of draining the fuel system (tank and filter) refilling with fresh diesel, and get the bugger started again. It'll belch and splutter a little while the residual petrol is cleared, but I'd be surprised if theres any lasting damage. Change the filter and lob in some Millers if you are paranoid.
