What bugs me is that even with a minimum mileage on variable servicing it should still be at least 12 months to be in line with fixed servicing, i.e. the oil is of a superior quality and should last longer.

Admittedly I haven't done much long distance driving over the past year.

The oil looks fine, and so I have reset the service indicator and will review matters later in the year.

I got mine up in 6 months quite easily, and by resetting the service indicator you may well have just invalidated your warranty, also if you've done it without vagcom I believe you'll have put the car onto fixed servicing

I'm out of warranty, and if i've reset it to fixed, why has it appeared after less than 12 months? (I reset it after servicing last time).

if the car is on variable it can appear at any time if you give the car enough stick.

If the car is on fixed you should only see it at 10,000 miles

Variable, but fixed would be better for me anyway.

9300 miles on variable sounds quite reasonable if your giving it plenty stick or not many good long runs.

Mine was due at a similar sort of mileage and the oil was black as buggery, car felt much crisper after the oil had been changed, If I hadn't have been bothered about my warranty id switched mine on to fixed servicing and changed the oil myself, but at the time I was more bothered about warranty and stamps in books

A number of points here:

a) If you drive the car hard you should be on fixed servicing (you've even said this yourself!!). Variable servicing states a max time/distance between services but not a min. If you drive hard on variable you may well get the service indicator even earlier than you would have had on fixed.

B) Had you been on fixed but driven very hard, it's possible that the oil would require changing earlier than stated intervals, even though the car wouldn't actually request it, because on fixed it wouldn't be using it's built-in sensor. Use your loaf, basically. If you're thrashing it, the recommended intervals (even on fixed) probably aren't sufficient.

c) NEVER EVER judge the quality of an oil by it's appearance/colour. It's impossible to tell the quality of an oil in this way.

It won't matter as to when the service is due, but it may well matter as to the longevity of your engine! Like I said in my previous post, if you thrash the engine regularly, even the fixed service schedule may not be enough to protect your engine.

Can i just say i'm confused now.

My car, when i do the trip meter it says its due in 300 plus days or 4k. Yet my car has done 8k which will take it to 14k not the 9k for fixed nor does it equate to 18.5k for variable. Its was registered in jan 08 and had 4k on the clock when i picked it up in february this year and it hasn't had a service either.

Sadly I drive like a granny as the more i spank the engine the more i pay for the company diesel.

Why do you say that, you thought you were on variable earlier?

Re: the oil, this has been discussed on other threads recently and the consensus seems to be that using longlife oil in a fixed service regime is ok. I think if you have a DPF, you MUST use longlife oil whichever service regime you use! (but check your user manual!)

Only because someone mentioned that if you reset the service indicator yourself, it reverts to fixed. I don't know if that's true though.

It is true, unless you used VAG-COM or equivalent. I assume you did it without any special equipment? If so then you are on fixed.
