Which Octavia?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

This is my first proper post save for introducing myself, and I'm hoping for some advice and opinion from you.

I'm looking for a solid reliable car to replace my 2004 Alfa 156 Sportwagon JTD 16V, and have pretty much narrowed the decision to buying an Octavia II. Likely to go with a 2.0 TDi Elegance or possibly a vRS if I can justify the extra cost to myself. I haven't ruled out petrol engines completely and like the look of the 1.8 TSi, but my last few cars have all been diesel, and I enjoy the economy coupled with all that torque!

I realise that people's driving habits and patterns are very different, but in your experience, what sort of mpg's and reliability can I expect from an Octavia? On the whole you seem a pretty happy bunch of owners, and it's the positive comments from owners and the industry in general that drew me to the Octavia in the first place.

I'll be coming to Skoda ownership after a few very costly years as an Alfa owner, and unfortunately the experience has been bad enough to put me off considering another as a replacement for the 156.

Any comments appreciated.

Cheers

Trevor

I can comment about reliability, I have driven for about 60.000Km in less than one year and zero problems (touch wood ;) )!

To comparate it with another fiat group car I've driven (the croma with 150cv) car is way more solid, tight, quiet and satisfactory, at least to me!

I drive a PD VRS, but either way you should be happy!

BTW you'll enjoy much more inner room and a large and usable boot!

I've also just jumped from the FIAT group having owned a Stilo Abarth and a Punto Sporting !!! The build quality is better (but my stilo being a modern car it was quite good also) same power as the stilo (I have a vRS TDi now) but a shed load torque. Much better brakes, infinately better steering and a much better suspension set-up. No reliability issues but i've only had the car 5 months. I dont really hang around when I drive, so MPG is on 40mpg but i have had it at 50mpg on a long run. Not had any reason to re-visit the dealer at all, but coming from the FIAT network I hope it will be alot better (but tbh that wont be hard)

I moved from a Focus tdci to my Vrs Tdi Pd Estate due to the need for a much larger car to move our large dog and impending summer arrival of another pup around, however I still have to travel about 80 odd miles a day when its my turn to drive to work. I average between 44 and 49 mpg even sitting at 70mph but the fact that you have that oustanding performance when you need it is what does it for me.A very happy Octavia estate owner,Ronnie

I really like the spec of the Elegance model. When I bought my Skoda in 2006, I couldn't quite afford the VRS model but i'm more than happy with it and in fact, I'm not sure whether my next car will be a VRS or an L&K. It's a tough decision.

I average 42 to the gallon, fairly short commutes and a blast at the weekends. I also have 225 tyres which makes a difference. I can get 50-60 on long distance journeys.

I've had many many cars over the years, and my present, the vrs cdi dsg is way better than anything i've had before, including mercs, bmw etc..style, build quality, performance..second to none..and sooo much fun :)

I have an Octavia Vrs TDI CR DSG 2009, great car, quiet, smooth, fast and economical. 47 mpg average (51 MPG on run and 43 MPG on fast run). Have had lots of quick cars previously to compare including -

Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4 23 MPG - Escort RS Cosworth 23 MPG - Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 31 MPG - Honda Civic EX 2.2 CDTI 44 MPG - Astra 2.0 GTI 38 MPG - Mitsubishi FTO GPX Mivec 23 MPG and Fabia VRS 53 MPG

The Octavia Vrs TDI CR DSG is the best all round car I've had, large interior, strong in gear acceleration coupled with good fuel consumption.

The petrol Vrs is also a good car; with our busy roads it was the torque of the diesel coupled with the DSG box that made my mind up. If you are able to stretch to the Vrs you will not be disappointed.

Test drive your short listed cars, manual and DSG; good luck whatever you choose.

I currently own a 1.8 TSi Octavia Ambiente and am very happy with it. It returns around 30 mpg (mainly urban use) and up to 40-43 mpg cruising at 70 mph. The new TSi engine has a power delivery which is somewhat reminicent a turbo diesel (plenty of torque at low revs) and is almost as quick as petrol vRS (a couple of 10th's slower to 60 mph). I came to my current car from a 1.9 TDi Roomster and found the TSi engine a complete revelation.

This is my third Octavia having previously owned 2 Mk 1 vRS's (gone but not forgotten). I also found the Mk2 Octavia is generally roomier than the Mk1, especially in the back.

Petrol vRS here and even I can get 35mpg.

Nearly 2 years of ownership and I've had zero defects so far.

Petrol VRS, and on 'sensible' runs can get 40-42mpg, highest is 48, (prb with a good wind behind me lol), even on unsensible runs can get 35-38mpg, around town averages 25-30 for me. Was a 100% volvo fan and wanted a t5 or an R car from the swedes, till I got the VRS now am firmly on Skodas side ;).

Would recmnd a test drive, some people think they are a bit stiff on the suspension.

Now on Octavia no 3. That should tell you something. The first one was a 1.8 turbo petrol which wasn't bad on fuel and the last two have been diesels. No 2 was the 2.0 140bhp PD and its replacement is the 170 bhp CR. All have been auto due to my licence and the last two DSG. The only problem I've had and it was with the first two is the exhaust pressure sensor failing. There are other posts on here about that - just do a search and it'll enlighten you. Whether you go for petrol or diesel is a matter for you based on your mileage etc but I'm getting around 40-50 out of the CR and mid thirties if it's pushed. It's not done 10k yet so I'm expecting this to improve.

There are loads of deals out there to be had, especially at the moment with the VAT offer. Test drive both the diesel and petrol and see what you think. Don't be afraid of pushing the dealers either !

Petrol MK2 vRS

Just because i can get 620 miles from a full tank with normal driving and the car is a really pleasant place to be on a long or short drive
