Wait for new vrs or go for old one

Featured Replies

Hello all, I have a bit of a dilemma. I bought a nice shiny new Fabia 16v 1.6 last summer and although I like it in some ways (comfort looks etc), I don't like it in other more crucial ways; it's lack of power and appalling mpg amongst others.

I have thought pretty much since I bought it that I would trade it i come the release of the new vrs whenever that will be but I am worried about a couple of things. Namely that the new car is looking like it may be quite expensive, more so than the old vrs taking in inflation.

I was at one point thinking that I definitely wanted to at least test drive an old vrs, just to get a feel for it, as I have not driven one before and also to dispel my concerns about its relatively low 0-60. But, since then I have wondered about how much of a saving I would actually get from running a diesel these days. So, more confusion.

Right now I am torn between waiting for the new one and going for the old one.

Any obvious ideas I am missing that may help me decide would be appreciated.

let me get one thing straight, you have absolutly nothin to worry about the 0-60 time!! just drive one 9.6 skoda claim, no where near more like 8 and after a remap 7! im clockin just under 7 on a good run, with my trusted girlfriend with the stop watch! lol

F.Y.I That's about as reliable as measuring your winky with a crinkled tape measure..

I've clocked myself in previous cars doing mid 6's, and been rather dissapointed at Santa Pod hitting late 7's

I'd wait for the new one as it should be around in about one years time.

Even though it will have much more power and torque than your 1.6 it will probably return better MPG, and it will also coincide with a facelift for the Fabia so there should be some nice improvements over your current car too :)

I wouldn't hold my breath for a new vrs. No plans have been made to make one yet so it wont be around for at least 18 months.

We don't even know the Spec!

I think it's fairly certain it will be presented along with the facelift Fabia at the Geneva Motorshow March 2010 and will be a 170BHP 1.4 TSI.

Remember Skoda are not well known for saying anything about new models until they are actually launched!

George Couser might be able to tell us more if he is around.

Make that 150hp as it has had the same power level as the Ibiza FR in the past not the Cupra...

158 bhp the same as the Golf GT?

The new VRS is out next monday.

A mate of my brothers uncle spoke to his dealer and he is sure that this is happening. He also mentioned it will only come in red.

What time?

Am Or Pm?

I actually ordered a 1.6 16v Sport last year, and was happy with the overall drive on the test drive. MPG wasn't that bad, averaged about 40 on it over about an hour.

Im averaging about 33 mpg in my 1.6. No its not too slow just suppose I'm up for a bit more. I just need to work out whether it will actually be worth it. I'm feeling that what I gain with the Vrs' mpg I will lose at the petrol pump (diesel pump). Really need to work it out.

New vRS is looking highly likely to be petrol, and should return more than 33mpg too I would have thought. I'd wait until the new vRS is launched (probably less than a year away) then decide.

That would be most sensible. Whether I do that is another question. I will test drive the existing vrs anyway.

After picking up my car after it service they reckon the new vRS will be a 1.4 TSI only with no diesel option at the end of this year. No idea on prices.

Being a petrol is kind of sad in a way - being a diesel made the current vrs different and sort of special

We just have to keep an eye out.

Well the VRS was a poor seller. It only really sold in numbers in this country which is not Skodas main market so there isn't really a lot of incentive for them is there.

Getting a bit bored with the new VRS speculation to be quite honest:thumbdwn:

In regard to the old VRS, I think the 0-60 time is a bit conservative. In the Autocar test reprint that I have, the test team clocked 0-60 at 8.2 seconds and that was the figure they gave in their test results in the magazine for the old car. They did manage one run at 7.2 secs on a boggo engine. However the 0-60 time is meaningless to me. What is important to me is in gear flexibility and the old VRS has it in spades: 5.6 secs 50-70 in fourth (Autocar figures).

Have a look and a drive at a few second hand cars but be quick because demand for them seems to be high.

Why? It's not like it's regurgitating the same old stuff, time after time, after time......

How could anyone possibly be bored with this or the other 30 odd threads speculating rumours from that bloke Dave who knows someone "in the industry" who once shared a train with someone who knew someone who used to work for Skoda.
