How long should my tyres last

Featured Replies

Hi Guys.

Had my car for 6 months now and covered just over 16K.

my front tyres are down to 2mm, is this excessive wear or have they lasted well?

These were the factory tires and im sure my company will replace them for something awful but can you recommend good tyres. (usually ATS fitted)

many thanks

Depends how you drive and the tyres fitted. I got 32k from a set of Michelin Pilot Primacy on my vRS and 27k of that was with 270+lb/ft of torque

Do you wheelspin everywhere :P

What budget does your company allow?

In my personal opinion from experience of them all i would get tyres in the following order

Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Michelin Pilot Sport 2

Avon ZZ3

Beware though these tyres are vRS sizes (225/40/17) so don't know if they do them in the size you require

Im currently running a mix of ZZ3 and Ultracs. (garage only had 2 ultracs in at time and i couldn't wait/go elsewhere) Had Ultracs on front for about 5k and they have lost 1.4mm and thats with 300lb/ft of torque :D ZZ3 are on front now and they are staying on till i wear them down and then will replace with 2 Ultracs

On 16" / 17" rims for a non-vrs I'd definitely go for Michelin Primacy HPs if you can. Quiet, long lasting and great wet and dry handling. On my last Octavia 2 I had Bridgestones (factory) which were dire, then Kumho KH11s which were better and then two sets of Michelin Pilot Primacys which were great.

...and depends on roads, too. If they're full of corners and down-uphill tyres will wear relatively more. With my commuting I find that Contis, and PZero lasted very similarly. Next try will be Goodyears.

i'd imagine not too much. i will be interested in what they offer.

I do some quite rough terrain time to time but not too often.

ive had a look at them and although the garage said there at 2mm i think there trying for work, ill have to get a guage from halfrauds.

You could always just look at them; if the Tread Wear Indicators are about level with the remaining tread but not actually vanishing into the lands either side of the groove, that's a shade over 2mm left.

Loving the Bridgestones I had fitted a few weeks ago.

It was an "emergency purchase" and so didn't have too much choice - I needed to get tyres there and then.

I didn't plan on paying £115 per corner - but I did and got Bridgestone RE050A's.

A lot quieter and much smoother ride than my old tyres.

They are certainly doing the job - very impressed with them.

This is on 17"

Got 40k out of my original Bridgestone 380's - mainly Motorway/D.carr. driving at NSL.

My current Avon ZV3's are, unfortunately, likely to last almost as long (see earlier post!).

I guess that it will be Michelins for my next set of boots - will suit my style of driving!

I suppose it all depends on how much you "stress" the tyres.

Only ever got less than 30k from a set back when I was 18, and drove like I stole it everywhere.

I dont drive like a saint now, but always manage over 30k.

I recently replace the two front tyres on mine - which were factory fit - at 22K. Mainly motorway driving.

I am also obliged to go to Kwikfit or ATS, both equally cr*p in my experience.

I always found ATS to be pretty good at tyres and exhausts, and honest with it.

The only time one of their staff tried to sell me something I didn't go in to buy, he'd found baffling breaking up on a silencer, and I'd heard broken baffling before so knew that's what it was. He hadn't had a chance to break it either, since it was back in the days when Elvin Safety still let Joe Public into fitting bays!

Bought my Octy at 1yr old with 14k miles. It had brand new Hankooks on the front and original fit Dunlops on the back.

21k miles later, front and back are down to 3-4mm and will be replaced in a couple of thousand miles

That is a situation where I'd have swapped tyres front - rear, mostly in order to kill the Dunlops quickly!

Yeah I know but deep down I'm just too lazy!

I now have a problem though - I still have a brand new unused Dunlop on the alloy spare in the boot
