Yuck, karnemelk... Might be healthy, etc, but in my book anything that is after its best before date should be washed down the sink :D

If you live near Leighton Buzzard (Bucks), on Saturdays there is a Dutch Snackcar who sells Frikandellen, Kroketten, etc... Have yet to sample him though as when we came accross it he was just closing up :(

I echo your yuck.

I won't admit to liking frikandellen, but I do enjoy a good kroket.

When I lived in Rheindahlen I used to cross the border regularly and buy chips with mayonnaise from fast food stands. Changing the subject, I bought a Sjoelbak board in Venlo in the 1970s and the game has been a massive hit ever since at parties. Men usually win, although not last year at an annual tennis/croquet/Sjoelbak evening we have with a group of friends. But we men will have our revenge this year.

PS with Moderator hat on: Isn't this thread supposed to be about the V5?

Funny you should mention the sjoelbak, as I'm getting one (inherited from my grandma) in a few weeks when my parents come over to spend their holiday here. We reckoned it would be a great hit for childrens parties, and your voice echoes that sentiment :)

As to it all be a bit off-topic.... it's my thread and as we are waiting for the DVLA now we might just as well spend our time upping our postcount a bit ;)

And I know that the DVLA is in Swansea and judging by the types I met there whilst at Uni, we could be waiting some time for them to respond... :D I'd expect you to be past 500 posts before you hear back, Quinten

Quinten, does the board have a laminated surface or is it varnished ply? The former is far faster when well-waxed and played with beech 'pucks'. Brilliant game for kids as well as adults. I never cease to be amused by how frustrated players get when the pucks refuse to go through the (wider) slots - usually as a result of excessive force being used! Just to add a bit of mystery, it is not a game for the limp-wristed or ham-handed.

By which time we will have dealt with all the highs and lows of Dutch cuisine...

(Dutch cuisine - now if ever there was an oxymoron...)

You saying something about Dutch cooking? Although I've never been keen on the German cooking either. Much prefer the tradition of cold wurst with brotchen.. mmmm :D (apologies for lack of umlouts)

umlouts? Spelling thugs, presumably .... :D

Although one aspect of Dutch cuisine has always struck me as odd is the "hundreds & thousands" (thats what we call them here) that they all have with their breakfast over there. Maybe Mattijs & Quinten can explain - I mean those little packets of chocolate things that people seem to sprinkle on bread etc.

BTW this may not be normal, but they are always present at hockey clubs over ther!

umlouts - I can't remember how you spell them in English... :D

Its the old thingies like this

It's 'umlaut' I believe (from O level German days many moons ago).

Ok, lets make a simple calculation...

My current postcount (including this post) is 341, I post at an avarage 6.95 messages a day, which means I need 22.8 days to meet the target... And I'm not taking bets on them beating that! :D

Q.

For example, makes a 'u' sound like 'ooo'

Does other things to other vowels

But doesn't do anything to a V5.........

H

Yes - umlaut - excuse my heavy-handed attempts at humour :o

Long way for me to go yet - could go for a TaviaRS post each line in a separate post I suppose...

H

Nick,

I briefly chortled.

Not as bad as Jon's parrot jokes (or mine for that matter).

;)

H

Hmm. German GCSE... I was lucky I had eine Deutsches Mutter to help mit meiner Schule arbeiten. I got an "A" anyway :)

Stu, this is what they are called:

Have you also grown fond of hagelslag during your stay here, Howard? ;)

And yes, they are perfectly normal. Part of Dutch folklore, I might even say. Quinten goes as far as importing them, as do the millions of Dutch immigrants in Canada, the US and Australia...

I'm surprised that, having become acquainted with them, you haven't resorted to the same practice by now. They're addictive! :D

Cheers Mattijs - now i'll know what not to ask for :D I love Holland and the Dutch but your breakfast is one of things that I have still not got used to - lots of bread, cheese & hams plus "hagelslag" I must admit that the only use for hagelslag that i have found is when, after several days of touring & drinking, you need sugar to try and get some energy back into the body before getting going again. Im afraid im still a big fan of the British fry up for hangover recovery

Stu,

My father went to college in Britain, and one of the Brit'isms he brought back with him to bore us with at the breakfast table was, "Breakfast should be your most substantial meal".

I'd say that a loaf of bread, cheese, hams, jams, hagelslag and good coffee (sorry, couldn't resist ;) ) are, in those words, quite "substantial" :D

When in the UK, I do decline on continental breakfast, though. When in Rome, etc...

... Must dispute the good coffee thing .... I know its not great in Britain but I was born & brought up in Kenya and the fresh coffee & tea from there is infinitely better :p Although must admit that the strength and blackness of Dutch coffee will help with the hangovers this weekend!

BTW - our team are so addicted to our fry ups that we take disposable barbeques with us so that we can still get our bacon & eggs etc. Sad but true :D

Thank gawd I didn't take any bets on this... I received my V5 today, and guess what? It is all correct! I'm now the proud owner of a black Skoda Octavia RS 5 door hatchback :D

Oh, and they got my name right in one go too... with the last car it took 3 times and 2 angry letters for them to copy it correctly :)

Oh, and before anyone starts accusing me of posting it in seperate posts just to up the postcount... you're absolutely right :p
