Octavia II Badge replacement

Featured Replies

Have just aquired an Octavia 2.0 Tdi and really impressed with everything so far. I want to renew the front Skoda badge as its the only thing on the car that looks it's age. I've checked through previous threads and cannot seem to find any advice on how to remove the front badge.

As the chrome grill surround is made of plastic I am reluctant to lever badge off with a screwdriver etc. Any advice would be gratefully received.

The badge is held on by 2 little plastic rods that go through the chrome surround and are then melted slightly at the rear (i.e. behind the chrome surround once the rods have been pushed through) to keep them stuck there.

There's also some sticky pads at the rear of the badge, sticking it onto the front of the chrome surround.

I've never actually taken the badge off but I've read you can easily loosen the sticky pads by running some cotton around the back of the badge and working it around.

Removing the grille might be overkill to get the badge off, but would probably be the 'best' way to get at it - the 2 melted parts could be removed quite easily that way.

Unless you get some better advice in the mean time (!!!) Stu's site is useful for a how-to on removing the grille - worked for me anyway:

Octavia-vRS.com - Colour Coded Grille

You might want to try dental floss rather than cotton thread - easier to work with.

and heat it with a hair dryer first so the glue is easier to work off.

Badge replaced and looks much better.

Basic procedure I followed was to drill out pins from behind badge with 10mm drill to remove the melted plastic bits on the ends of the pins. Heated badge from front with hot air gun, used dental floss sawing action to loosed self adhesive pads bedind badge, then gently levered badge off with screw driver protecting chrome with a rag.

Stuck new badge on an used sonme silicone adhesive on pins to secure.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Ive got a fabia that I need to change the badge of. Ive got a new one from ebay that Im happy with and it seems the right size. But Im HOPELESS with DIY. So what do you mean by "drill out pins from behind"? Will a hair dryer do for hot air gun (this is to liquify the glue right?) ..and how does one "melt" the back of the pins after securing it in?

Sorry if its all blatantly obvious to the rest, but as you can tell, I have no clue!

OK, Ive come to the stage where Ive removed the old badge. Not a perfect job, but done. Now, how do I clear it of all left over glue before I stick the new badge on? Please let me know of any ideas you might have.

Cheers

A product containing petrol distillates will do the trick. WD40 is usually most obtainable/popular.

Or you might find that it comes off in large chunks if you pick at an edge of the old adhesive and pull :)

The surface doesn't have to be 100% perfect though for the new adhesive and badge to stick.

Dental floss much stronger than cotton - and will prevent it getting grill-givitis.
