Headlamp washers?

Featured Replies

Hi there folks.

Does anyone know anything about headlamp washers?

Is it likely that there would already be wiring in place? That isn't a major issue as it wouldn't take much to wire it up myself.

Also how is the water sprayed from the washer bottle? Does it have a seperate pump?

Thanks

I believe models with headlight washers had a larger washer bottle, and a different bumper (see Felicia 1996 requires registration). Also looking at that I wonder if it's only 98 onwards models that had headlight washers.

That won't really matter too much. I won't even be using the Felicia headlamp washers and just get some low/flush fitting type ones anyway.

The only problem I can see is getting the water out of the bottle. Would probably need a second pump.

I'd either use T connecting pieces on the front washer and hope there's still enough pressure to deliver sufficient water to the windscreen, like these Halfords Or use the rear pump and do without having the rear wash feature.

Edit: just thought perhaps there's a way of upgrading the front pump to deliver higher pressure.

Hmmm... Will have a think.

I could perhaps just grab a second pump with a pipe into a hole in the lid of the washer bottle. Would want to use a standard headlamp washer switch on the dash... if I can make room for it that is! All the spaces are used up on mine! lol

The headlamp washers are using the same pump as the windshield washers, don't know if it's a different pump than in the ones that don't have headlight washers..

If you look at the pic below, you'll see a t-connector to the other pump

There's two pumps there thought. The one on the right is the normal one for front and rear windscreens and the one on the left must be for the headlamp washers.

Thanks

You would need the second pump. Headlight washers are much higher pressure than windscreen washers as they are designed to blast the dirt off rather than just supply water for use with wipers. I would also try and get the larger tank as you'll find a standard one will empty very quickly if you're washing the lights.

The wiring shouldn't be too difficult; the standard systems I've used have basically been activated with the windscreen washers IF the headlights are turned on. Some also have a delay (so you have to hold the washer stalk in the 'squirt' position for a couple of seconds before the headlights spray)

I'm not sure if you've selected any suitable washers but when I was considering doing this on a previous car, I planned to use nozzles from a Clio (around 52 plate with Xenons IIRC) as they're quite subtle and also small, so should be easy to mount... I'm not sure if the spray angle can be altered though, so it would be a good idea to check.

Thanks.

Will look round the scrapper for a tank with the headlamp pump on it then.

I had looked around on ebay and there were a few possible ones I could use including some ford ones that are more or less flush fitting.

Also in regards to the switch etc there is an original headlamp washer switch available that I will use then wire it so they will only work when the lights are on.
