Ignition Distributor Timing

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I've got a problem with my 1996 felicia, a few days ago, the ignition distributor got JUNK, some internal pieces jumped out of it place and things turned to be bad inside there..:orb_sick:

I bought another one, and also bought the time chain. mounting the time chain was easy because I just unmounted the old one an (without moving anything) placed the new one in the exactly way the old one was (are my wrong?) .

the problem now is :orb_scareHOW DO I MOUNT AND GET THE DISTRIBUTOR ON TIME, I have no clue could anybody give me a little light into disk freezing darkness? PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE :orb_upset

You will have to set the no.1 cylinder to TDC.

To do this:

1. Engage 5th gear

2. Jack up a front wheel

3. (optional) remove a couple or all of the spark plug to make turning the wheel easier

4. Turn the wheel to turn the engine and while looking down the left hand side of the distributor at the crankshaft pulley align the little (and I mean LITTLE knotch in the pulley) up with the second mark on the timing chain cover

You may find it very difficult to see the little mark so maybe give the crankshaft pulley a wipe as you turn it the first time.

5. Make sure the new dizzy is fully inserted

6. Line up the end of the rotar arm in the dizzy with the little dot on the bottom metal part of the distributor housing

7. Put the cap back on and line up the line on the no.1 cylinder spark lead (the line is on the plastic dizzy cap) with the little dot you just lined the rotar arm up with.

This is the method that I have used before and have worked very well even after a total messup of timing with the dizzy out and the engine turning by accident.

Hope this helps.

Many Thanks Phill...

there is just a little "insignificant" detail I forgot to mention in the original post: I TOOK THE ENGINE OUT OF THE CAR....

yeap, the engine is out of its place because I wanted / needed to fix-up another things like oil / coolant leaks and some other issues.

at another hand (don't laugh at me, please) what is it that you call the dizzy? is it the ignition distributor? I figure out it is... but just to make sure...

the steps seems to be easy to follow so I'll go over it... any suggestions, things to take care of, prays to tell or something?

Ah right. That shouldn't cause too much of a problem. As long as you can turn the engine and it should make it easier to see the mark on the pulley.

And yes sorry that is the distributor that I am calling a 'dizzy' jus slang really like we called the Felicia a 'felly'.

At Phil's step 5 and 6, don't be embarrassed if it takes you several shots to get the distributor inserted correctly rather than 1 tooth off on the drive sprocket. Even professional mechanics sometimes need several shots to get this right.

Yeh thanks Ken... I remember a few choice words coming out of my mouth while trying to get it in!

Also the rotar arm does turn slightly as you put it in so you will probably need to take it out and put it back in a few times to get it lined up properly.

It is an easy job and only took me about 20 mins total and has been perfect since!

hi folks,

thanks for all your help in this case.....

I think I did it right mounting the distributor, however. I do now have another question:

I'm Trying to start the engine outside, so if I did something wrong I have not to unmount it back again (it's a hard job for me to do).

so what do I need to start it up?

I got the coil, the electric transformer that is plugged to the coil, the battery cables and of course a battery, get a wire to the + and - of the coil direct from the battery and the regular connection of the transformer from the coil and the "dizzy". but for some reason, when I plug the coil cables from the battery, it sparks like a short-circuit? and it seems to uncharged the battery and it do not start......

I think the connection to the coil and the transformer is not well done...

any suggestions?

A proper engine test stand! Most engines will fall over if you try and fire them up whilst they're sitting on their sump on a floor!

Thanks Ken for your answer,

I really did a little wood-job the Sunday before last, and build my own stand (could not win a beauty contest but, worked good for me) :orb_elf:

well I'll tell you that after a BIG help from Cepheuz :orb_cool:and finding that the control unit have a printed map on the bottom part (explaining the electrical connection) finally I could start it up for a little while Sunday afternoon. :orb_rocki

However, It started while I was holding the cable of the spark-plug #2 out, to check if it was coming spark from it.

so, Does it mean that the timing is wrong-set? (I'm not pretty sure if it should start without a cable)

well after all, I can now get the engine back to its place, I just wanted to see it Run before I mount it back. If it have run outside there, any other thing could be fixed after I mount it back.

It's a good engine if it will fire up and run smoothly cold on 3.
