tighten the rocker cover, maybe put a new seal or gasket on it

Whats the rocker cover?

How much would it be to get a new seal or gasket on it?

rocker cover is the top bit thats leaking. don't over tighten the bolts though, if you need a new seal they dont tend to be massively expensive less than £10 i would say.

As above, don't tighten the bolts, you'll warp the cover. Change the gasket/seal and torque the bolts correctly. Won't be the head gasket, I've never heard of one going on a PD engine, no doubt someone will tell us otherwise.

£5-10 for a new rocker cover gasket and you'll be fine.

Will I be able to fit this or is it a garage job?

You should be ok, as you're only lifting the cover. Be sure than it's not windy, and no debris ends up in the exposed valves. Oven her up, remove old gasket and ensure every last bit is removed and surface clean and flat, new one in the grooves, cover back on and torqued up to correct levels.

Generally gaskets are solid, and fragile during transport.

Looking at Haynes manual, it looks dead easy.

Undo 2 top nuts and spacer washers. Carefully lift off the cover. Use an old screwdriver to remove the old gasket and clean the two mating surfaces. Replace Gasket, making sure the gasket it goes back into the groves. Tighten nuts to 18 lbf ft (25 Nm). Job done.

I think you can manage that yourself.

Before buying a new gasket, check the securing bolts haven't worked loose. I've had that happem more often than I've had the cover gasket stop sealing.

Pretty easy, done this during 30 minutes in night :)

The gasket is about 2 pounds (converting from Russian Rubles ) :D

And its almost impossible to overtighten the nuts because the spacers underneath them are rubber

The main thing is to ensure there is no oil on the surfaces, otherwise it will start leak again in that places.

My seal is leaking in exactly the same place but would this be the reason why my engine sounds a lot noiser than usual. It was only sealed about a month ago at the garage when it was serviced so i'm going to take it back but should i expect that they will tell me that something else has caused it to leak again?

Any advice will be gratefully accepted

1) I'd not expect a rocker cover oil leak to make the engine sound noiser unless it leaks so much oil it drops the pressure.

2) If the garage had the cover off, it's their responsibility to make sure it's back right, including seating the gasket, and torqueing the bolts correctly. If the gasket has failed a month or so after they worked on it, then either it should have been replaced at service (pay for parts, but not labour) or has broken due to being mis-seated (their responsibility for parts and labour).

Thanks for that

The invoice states rocker gasket sealed but there is no seal listed amongst the long list of what whas altered but there is a sundry item for £5 which from what i understand would be roughly the cost of a seal. I'll check with them.

I've also been advised that my bushes have slight movement. Is this an expensive job? and if i leave it for a while will it cause additional damage to the suspension, hence making it more expensive? The garage that serviced it advised me that i needed to go to skoda because it requires specialist equipment but i have been trying to avoid going to them as I've heard some bad reports and there only seems to be one locally.

Unless the bush movement bothers you when driving, I'd leave it until it actually fails an MoT; it's a subjective item rather than a fully objective one.

As to cost, that depends on whether the bushes can be pressed in and out, or you need new lower arms (guess which is more expensive). The specialist equipment needed is either a hydraulic press, kit for doing a proper front end alignment check, (not just tracking) or both, so maybe your local garage doesn't have it all, but some independants do.

I've no idea where you are, but if you check the Review Centre, you should be able to get other Briskodans' views of your local dealership. I would say that Skoda dealers seem to vary from the useless to the very good though.

The Mechanic said i needed to go to skoda as they had the specialist equipment to check the alignment and he said it would be an MOT failure but that isn't due til december. Its a large garage that deals with coaches and buses and the impression i got was not that they couldn't do it just that i'd have a more reliable job if i went to skoda as they have some fancy machine.

The movement doesn't really bother me but if i wait til dec will it mean that there will be a greater chance that i'll need the have the lower arms done rather than just the bushes. Have just been made redundant so money is in short supply at the moment

I'm aware that the local Farmers Skoda has very mixed review; on here and from friends.

Skoda dealers aren't the only people who have equipment for doing a full alignment.

Ref the bushes, there's no possibility of causing significant damage to the arms by not changing them now, and as I said they're somewhat subjective, so some MoT testers might not fail them even if your mechanic thinks they'd fail.
