how much? 40k service plus brakes

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I am just looking to see how much you would expect to pay for a 40K service.

I am on Annual servicing, and in a few months, will be 4 year/40k miles, will have done about 36k by then.

Am i right in thinking i need 40k service

brake fluid change

cam belt

water pump at this point?

Oh also, at last service i was told would need new brakes at next service for sure, if not before as still on originals, so i need to add them in too!

Help!

Thanks

without checking my receipts which are in the other room and I can't be bothered to get out of bed...

at a main dealer I think I paid about £400 for the 40,000 service + cam belt. I subsequently had front discs and pads for about £150 and then £50 odd quid rear pads only.

is it recommended to get the cambelt and waterpump doen at 4 year, 40k service?

or anything else?

anyone?

Yes it is recommended. 4 years or 60K (miles) whichever is first.

I had the same service last year.

Have you tried the search I know I posted my price. Hold on i'll have alook for the link.

Here it is:

Ive just has the phone call from the Skoda Dealer (Bickertons in Sheffield).

The shooping list:

60K Major Service (mileage approx 32k, 54 plate VRS)

Cam Belt

Water Pump

Tensioner

Brake Fluid

Hydralic Tensioner

MOT

Front Discs (MOT Advise)

Front Wishbone Bush's (MOT Advise)

Anti Roll Bar Collars (MOT Advise)

2 x Front Indicator Bulbs (MOT Advise)

Thats one hell of a bill. £1,271.59 to be exact

The joys of motoring

I did negotiate a discount so it was cheaper then the price I posted.

I find it very strange that the recommendations vary so much between countries.

In Finland and Sweden the cam belt+water pump is in the service program at 180.000 km (~110K miles) for the vRS, however it is recommended to change it at 120K km or 90K km service. I would not change the cam belt at 40K miles, it seems far too early. I've heard of several people who changed at the 120K km service (75K miles), and the belt still looked very good.

I'm getting mine changed at the 90K km service, just in case, though.

The regular Octavia has the cam belt changed in the 90K km service, according to the service plan. So, it seems like the vRS has a stronger belt.

I read a massive amount of contrasting info on cambelt change intervals as well. For me, 40k seems too early as well. I know many people state it's about how old it is as well, but I'm not overly convinced. I've always been more comfortable with the every 60,000 miles figure for most cars.

I bet that wouldn't have cost any more than £500 from an independent/vag specialist.

I did get alternative quotes and they werent a million miles away for all the work. I ended up paying just over £1k Inc VAT.

JBS in Chesterfirld were the cheapest VAG specialiast/Independent and Skoda match priced them for the service and cam belt. Which for the record was over £500 without any of the MOT advisery work.

For all the bush's discs etc there was only around £100 in it and take into account the hassle of taking the car to different garages for different parts to me it wasnt worth it. Although they were only advisery theres a deal to be done on labour if your car is already in bits. And I keep my cars/bikes in tip top condition so went ahead with all the work advised instead of waiting till it HAD to be done.

I was happy (enough) with the price, they gave a decent discount which was in line with independents and I get the quality and service from a main dealer.

I dont exoect a main dealers price to be the same as a independent but then they dont offer the same service or have the same overheads. Since I wasnt getting ripped offed I opted to support the dealer with my business.

It pays to get a least 2 or 3 quotes before going ahead with any work.
