Supplying own oil for service?

Featured Replies

folks...what your position on supplying your own oil to a dealer for a service? I paid about £15 for three x 1 litre bottles from Costco last year...but was charged about £80 for the oil the dealer supplied at the last service...are there any issues doing it?? (I am sure they will tell me that there is)

They shouldnt mind at all.

I used a skoda dealer for my last service and they had no problems with me supplying the oil, saved me a packet!

thanks guys...hopefully Costco are still doing the stuff & if not,any suggestions where to buy from & what to buy...the Costco stuff was Castrol (same spec as long life etc)

Apparently Costco had triple 1 litre packs of Castrol Extra 5w-30 for just under 20 quid inc VAT. This stuff is 504 / 507 spec. Not sure if they've still got any, I didn't notice it in there the other day.

Check Opie Oils out, they're a partner on here and currently have a Spring 15% off promotion. You also get 10% off retail pricing for being a member on here. Register for an account - dead simple. Then SPRING15 at the checkout.

Currently Castrol Edge suitable for a petrol Mk2 vRS and filter works out at £50 delivered! That's 6L so you'll have enough for some spare to carry around too

Opie Oils for engine oil, car oil, motorbike oil, gear oil, motor oil, race oil, brake fluid

They have a section on there for you to enter your car details and a selection of choices will come back.

Will check it out the next time I am there...2 lots for about £32 would be a good deal v £80 from the dealer !

Double check it's 5w-30 Edge which is 504 / 507 and not 0w-30 which is only 505.

As already said usually not a problem, I gave my dealer a 4L pack of VW507 Mobil 1 ESP to use at the last service.

I booked my other car in for a service today. Asked about supplying my own oil to be told if they"fitted it the work couldn't be guaranteed as they didn't supply it" I can't say I was that happy with the response but we don't have an alternative dealer handy so i'll be happy and live with it.

I haven't used this place before and would like to build a good rapport with them(some warranty issues to sort out) so will go with it for now.

Most dealers will say that they will put a note on the oil to say something like that.

I asked mine to note it was a sealed bottle of Mobile 1 ESP, VW507 on the system, which he did.

All very nice about it.

That's a bit rough, but I suppose I can understand their angle. Mark's point is a good one about a note being made that it was sealed before commencement. Will remember that one for future, if I come up against this issue :)

How much for 4L of ESP? Our local Skoda dealer is the cheapest I've seen for 507 spec - £11 for a litre top up bottle.

I've just had a service at 19k miles on my Vrs. I rang 3 dealers in and around the area - none of them would let me use my own oil for service. So I was charged £57 for 5 litres - irritating.

£31 on trade IIRC.

If you want to get your own oil, then either halfords 504/507 isn't bad, especially when they have offers on, or the Millers 507 oils are good. The millers was £36 for 5L last time i got some.

With their current offer, 4L is £41.29 delivered from Opie. To be honest though, you'd be better going for their service pack - which gives you 6L and an oil filter for £49.47 delivered :)

I know a dealer won't install a non-skoda oil filter and to be fair there is good reason for that with some of the after market stuff sold. With the price difference I'd probably get a service pack and not use the filter or see if opie can do you a pack minus the filter.

The Stun today had a Halfords ad with 20% off Mobil 1 - 5 litres for £38.99 - can't be bad !
