had a look yesterday, and the long term average on my trip computer says something like 27mpg

prob really simple but how does one check the total average mpg of the car?

**** the bed, 27mpg long term is real bad... I've just checked mine and it's around 47mpg.

Admittedly, i only get about 400 miles per tank, im always late for something so the fabia gets a good "clear out" :)

If you drive in town or on a relatively flat 30mph road, then put it into 6 the gear, take you feet off the pedals and it keeps going a steady 30 mph.

No offence, but I disagree. I think that will put un-necessarily high strain on the entire drive train.

I start getting anxious about leaving it in 6th after I drop under 60mph, never mind 30mph and town work :)

press the button until you see something like Ø mpg

on my vrs it resets after every few hours or every use (not yet worked it out)

i.e. i drive home from work, next moreing everything is reset (hours driven, average milage, speed etc)

is this not normal?!

There's two counters.

The first resets after 2 hours of the car being off.

The second doesn't. To switch between the two , press the button on the bottom of the stalk briefly. To manually reset it to zero , hold this button down for a couple of seconds.

the second reading is a long term average over a period of time which resets every 10 hours

EDIT! OOPS! sorry i meant every 100 hours!!

My LT average of the compie is shown below (inaccurate), when new it was 51 (inaccurate), I get about 45 mpg (accurate -ish) around town which is ok, longer runs can get up to 65 if legal, 50 if breaking the law (which I would never condone of course!)

You appear to be doing ok with 420 from 'normal' fill to light coming on, that is just over 45mpg I reackon. You driving technique is OK, don't worry about it, if it is on the limiter you will notice and if it is labouring in too high a gear you will also notice.

Just enjoy the torque!

mistake!!

Ive just taken over our lasses 2001 tdi estate with 108k on the clock, and im lucky if i get above 40mpg on a legal run, and not much more tham 35 if im enthusiastic. Ive not yet worked it out accurately by brimming it, run and brimming again, but surely it should be better than this

In the vRS it's actually the other variant, toe and toe...

I brake with the left side of my foot then twist my foot slightly to tap the throttle with the right side of my foot.

Basically, imagine that there's a pedal between the brake and throttle and you're aiming for that, so you get the brake then just twist slightly to dab the throttle...

Hope that explains what i mean.

Kev

Thats how I down shift aswell although i tend to still try and use my heel to 'blip' but end up using more of the side of my foot than heel. I also find it really is only any use when pushing on properly. when braking gently it is really quite difficult to not affect the braking.

Tip - use gears to slow down. When you see a red light coming up, ease off gas and allow gap to form between you and car in front. If you're lucky by the time you reach the queue the light will be green and you can simply keep going.

REMEMBER: IN GEAR COASTING USES ZERO FUEL

If you're Coasting, arent you in neutral?

Or you have the clutch pedal down. I think the poster you quoted is referring to overrun fuel cut-off, where if you keep in gear and lift off the throttle, the fuel supply is turned off.

You could always forget about the accelerator and use the engine at idle the whole time. This would presumably get you wicked awesome fuel economy but has some *minor* issues -

a. you go veeeerrryyy sloowwwwllyyy

b. you accelerate veeerrrryyy sloowwwwlllyyy

c. enjoy your clutch

Clutch ? What's one of those then ? My DSG will do top end of the thirties and mid forties if I'm in no hurry. It once said 60mpg but I've not seen it since and it's the CR. And yes, I know the DSG has two clutches before anyone points that out !

Yes , it should be about 25% better!

Any ideas how to get it better? Im a technician at a truck dealer, so not afraid of mucky hands, but ive little knowledge of the fabia engine. Ive done the obvious, tyre pressures, air filter, removing exess weight etc, but with these little engines i dont know where to start

First stage is to check if there are any fault codes logged, I'd have thought.

If all codes OK and no obvious problems try:

1. Clean EGR and intercooler - and then elephant hose mod - nice dirty jobs for you but worthwhile

2. Millers or 2 stroke as additive

3. Fuel filter?

Best of luck

I've the 1.9TDI PD105....i struggle on a mixed run to beat 40-42mpg. Around town about 35mpg.

Does anyone find that there is very little engine breaking with there 1.9TDI's?

Basically i can be cruising at in 4th gear at 1200rpm and drop it into 2nd gear where it revs high but doesnt really slow down that much either.

No offence, but I disagree. I think that will put un-necessarily high strain on the entire drive train.

Not to mention the safety aspect due to lack of control - you can't accelerate at 30mph in 6th, and if you need to brake you'll stall!
