God dam KKK Turbo

Featured Replies

Well its finally happened to me yesterday on my way to work just as i pulled into the car park went round the corner and pressed the loud peddle a bit just got onto boost when bang a very strange mechanical noise (one that you hope never to hear:eek:) ans a nice BIG black cloud came from the back and then a not so nice mechanical whistle hoping just to be a pop hose but still not very happy.

So anyway not feeling very well anyway:rolleyes: i went home from work sick and took it to the garage for them to have a look and they called last night to tell me and guess what the turbo has gone.

Just waiting for the phone call today to let me know how much:mad:

I did think of that but i really have no plans to mod the car (that much)

Or even just the more reliable Garrett PD130 unit...

aside from the clutch and map, does all that much else need changing?

I've heard that both the KKK and Garrett turbos were built done to a price and pretty much as "good" as each other

I'm under the belief that the Garrett unit is stronger than the KKK. From failures we've seen on customers cars here that'd confirm the trend.

I believe the bearings in the Garrett unit are 360 degree whereas the KKK arent. Compressor and turbine wheel sizes are also different between the two.

We've always suggested replacing with a Golf Garrett unit instead of the standard KKK.

Kev,

The garage thats doing the work told me that they cant get hold of KKK for that reason as they are just fail all the time. so i am getting the garrett:D

Yep, I just had a KKK replaced with a Garrett, but lucky I managed it as a warranty job from Skoda, about a month before the warranty ran out too.

Good man! :) Nice reliable turbo from now on then :)

I had exactly the same thing last march, my local Skoda dealer quoted me £1400 for a replacement!!!! I phoned Star Performance who offered me a Stage 2 turbo for the same money. No brainer there I thought. A Stage 1 was only £50 cheaper too.

Still £1400 out of the blue was hard to swallow.

is the standard fit 'all KKK' or does it depend upon year of manufacture? Was the Garrett even fitted as std to the VRS?

mine whistles on tickover when warm and when just on boost - been told its all normal.

Errrr, without being rude what garage is it in? As the highlighted black smoke means boost leak, not turbo blown.

White/Blue Smoke = Turbo knackered

Black = Unburnt Fuel - Boost leak.

As many here will know my standard car's turbo went bang at just 34K. Out of warranty but full history and low mileage meant that Skoda paid goodwill for the turbo and I had to pay "only" £310 for the fitting. Don't know what unit they used as a replacement but beggars can't be choosers. If your car is standard, low mileage and has a full dealer history, it is well worth contacting Skoda (or getting a dealer to do it if recovered).

I didn't have any smoke just a loud scream like a slipping fanbelt and no power. When the AA guy said turbo I nearly threw up! Can someone tell me why does the Skoda use KKK and the Golf Garrett? Also what turbos where standard equipment for the SEAT Ibiza and Audi A4. Did the Fabia get a cheaper turbo as it is a cheaper car? If so that goes against the argument that with Skoda you get VW quality and engineering for less money:confused::confused:

I think the PD130 and below Ibiza generally had a KKK turbo but the PD160 had a Garrett?

When mine went all together there was a puff of black smoke apparently then it never smoked at all after that LOL. Just lacked power.

Thats what mine did.

Just a update picked the car up yesterday and the guy showed me my old turbo and and shaft that gose though the middle was like a baby's rattle it was moving all over the place and rattled it was well F**ked.

But now £700 down:mad: atleast i have my car back with the better garrett:D

I guess I will just have to see with mine but I guess my shaft and bearing went. I actually got under the car and felt the turbo and you could feel something scraping across the housing.

Still don't understand why two makes are used but I presume kkks are used in the Octy and Supurb taxis you see with intergalactic miles. Don't know how many turbos they have had. All I know was that I was not amused at the turbo going at 34 thou!

Mine sheared off completely, the exhaust turbine ended up lodged in the front of the catalytic convertor.

I did have a thread somewhere with pictures to show the damage, i paid £800 for turbo replacing with brand new KKK unit, along with a service and the inlet pipes and the catalytic convertor cleaned of any debrie.

Hasn't there been the odd problem with the castings failing on the garrett units?

Is there any way of telling if your turbo is on the way out?

Don't know, not an expert but I have read about increased noise and lag. Mine was fine one minute and then just had this banshee scream and lack of power the next. Pulled over immediately: Thank goodness I was on a rural b road with a verge and not on the motorway.
