Slight knocking from front suspension.

Featured Replies

After changing to Weitec coilovers I seem to have developed a slight knocking sound that seems to come from the front left suspension area and I'm a bit baffled by it. It's very hard to describe the noise, it's not a loud knock, just a gentle tap really. Seems to occur going over speed bumps or accelerating/slowing down (mainly around the transition from doing one or the other) or if I wind lock on whilst stationary. I replaced the top mount and bearings when I changed the strut over so it shouldn't be that. I'm wondering if I haven't done the top mounts bolts up tight enough (the 3 that hold it in the turret) and if the thread is maybe catching on the turret as it moves slightly so I'm going to check that tomorrow. My other thought was that I've done the steering arm up too tight and it's binding and releasing but I think that's unlikely. What do people reckon?

Hi mate jack it up and have a look under the wheel arch.

the bracket fot the arb some times rubs the inner arch

Just fitted AP coils mate and have the same as you all sorts of tappies and knockies coming from the passenger side going over bumps and lock.

1. Metally clunky noise when going over bumps in the road from what sounds like top mount

- Checked top mount and all done up tight, brand new ones went in.

- No idea what this is, could be engine mount

2. Tappy noise on full lock turning right

- Cv joint? No idea really.

3. Knocky scrapy noise turning left over a bump.

- I am fairly sure its the droplink rubbing on the arch liner so need to cut it away.

Yeah, I know the droplink hits on full lock, but this is doing it with no lock applied at all. And when I wind lock on and off when stationary just a 90 degree turn of the wheel will make it happen. I was wondering if there was something loose in the drivers door but the fact that it does it when stationary would suggest its something suspension related.

same as mine, and its getting worse

crawling around town at 20mph in 2nd gear and it clonks like mad from the passenger side, then giving it any right lock sets it off worse.

really annoyed at the moment

no noise from the drivers side... silent

You not found out the source?

Nuh.

There's a thread on Seat cupra now, people with coilovers on the ibiza mk4 getting the same thing.

Do they come with their own top mounts or do you transfer over their own??

well I dont know if could apply to you but I found the source of my clunking over bumps and grinding on full lock turning right.

And it was something very simple

On the passenger side, the spring on the coilover was wound up ever so slightly tighter than the drivers side, and it also seemed to settle a little differently.

What had happened was that the two largest coils in the middle were contacing each other over bumps.

If the car was lower it wouldnt have been a problem, as theyd have been pressed completely together and acted as a de-facto single coil, however because there was a minimal amount of space (probably 2mm) they were contacting over the slightest bump or dip and this was making the knocking.

Just wound it back 3/4 of a turn and problem solved.

i'd try some roll bar drop links

Hmm, I'll have a gander and see if I'm suffering from the same issue. Is it something you can see on full lock? Otherwise it'll be a bugger to spot if you can only investigate whilst steerings dead ahead!

Yes just turn it to the right and shine a torch up in there.

Or just jack the suspenson up with the scissor jack.

Agreed, just had mine done and reclaimed my sanity!!!
