Coolant Dropping Below Minimum

Featured Replies

My coolant has dropped ever so slightly past the minimum line. As it such a small drop I added a touch of water to bring just over the minimum line. Now 4 weeks later it has just dropped passed the minimum line again.

I have checked it after the car has been sitting all night so it's nice and cold. Also I noticed that there is a bit of condensation at the top of the bottle so I suspect that if this was not there it might be just above the minimum line?

I did do a search but could not find exact answer. Is it possible the seal on the cap could be not very good and letting it evaporate out?

Thanks,

Yep, I replaced my cap and all is well. My level was going from way over max to under minimum in a few days

Try searching for fan switch temp sensor seal; mine was leaking and just needed a new gasket and nipping up.

Was it just a O ring?

Mine did that a few months ago, ended up being the bottom outlet of the radator (on the right if you look down at it), don't know how it fixes to the radiator, if it was just a seal, or a cracked outlet pipe, but it was replaced under warrently.

Run the car to pressurise the system and make sure theres nothing leaking from hoses etc before buying any parts. You never know, the cap might be fine, seems like a strange thing to go wrong?

Thanks for the replies.

I have a month left on warranty so I'm going to give it to the dealers to look at.

you cant get a seal for fan switch either dealer or non genuine ptfe tape only anyone who says can get a seal is talking c**p

I have a related problem on my 2007 VRS.

The high temp light starts flashing after 5 minutes of driving and it seems to be using water. I filled it up to the top on Sunday (it took 1 litre to fill) and took it for a 1/2 drive, the temp guage stays on 90 degrees c throughout the journey but temp light flashes throughhout. On return I started undoing the cap on the filler and it started boiling over and steaming.

Wasnt sure if that was normal after motorway drive on a coolish day?

any thoughts or similar symptoms from anyone ?

Nice bit of thread revival that Dave, just shy of 5 years :)

Hopefully you have worked this out by now but opening a pressurized system that's at 90c is a bad idea and yes it will squirt hot coolant at you. Topping up with water in an emergency is better than cooking it, but you should be using coolant to the correct spec/concentration, if you have to feed it a ltr then it's lost it quite quickly unless this has been happening for a while? How often do you check it and when was the coolant last changed? Fabia's are known to suffer coolant sensor failure (new bottle inc sensor is circa £20 at retail iirc) but in this case you say you've put 1ltr in so you need to find out where it's going as it's clearly not just a duff sensor. Start looking for white deposits on the pipework and radiator etc. but taking it for a spin won't magically fix it. Corners of radiators and joints in pipes tend to be the more common weak spots.
