Very loud turbo

Featured Replies

Hi all

Ive had my vrs since feb and since ive had it ive always thought the turbo was loud and didnt have the punch in the back i was used to but put that down to originally owning a scooby running 1.3bar. But now my mate has one to and his turbo is no where near as loud as mine so had a look around and found a boost leak where the metal turbo outlet pipe joins the rubber pipe that goes on to the pancake pipe so took it back to dealer who sold it to me who then said there was nothing wrong with it even thou there was oil around the join, so this weekend did the fix that i saw on here using silicon reducer and checked all other joins for leaks and tightened all jubille clips up. That has got rid of that leak but turbo is still really loud it does have a lil bit more of a punch in the back but dies off quickly and goes flat, Now im thinking the turbo could be on its out. If so is there anyway i can tell for sure? It has no smoke as far as i can tell.

Thanks Brad

Ps the car has done 99k, oh yea just started to be able to hear recirculating dump valve its the standard bosch one and car is standard

If you can hook up a boost gauge to it or get someone to plug VAG-Com into it you should be able to see how much boost it's making, it should be making somewhere between 10 and 11 psi (about 0.75 bar) if it's standard. If much less than that then there may be something wrong with the turbo, or the system of valves and pipes that controls the turbo. Have you checked the oil feed / return lines are okay?

I was under the car yesterday and had a good look around but couldn't see any obvious leaks or loose fittings/lines etc.

I will try find someone with Vag.com in the Harlow/Essex area cos havent got a boost gauge at mo.

Ive just emailed the dealer who sold me the car to express my concerens so will hopefully get a reply off them tomorrow and will try arange taken it up there at weekend and take them out in it to show them the fault.

the fix you did with a reducer, is that the one where you fit it over the metal collar or the one where you cut the crappy joint out and use an alloy joiner?

Its the one where you fit it over the the metal collar, seems to of worked ok got no oil residue around join anymore but will check later in week to double check everything is tight
