felicia breaking system

Featured Replies

Hey guys, since ive decided to fix all the little niggles with the fun and keep it on the road at all costs i really need to sort the brakes. Having not driven a car in 7 years i didnt realise quite how bad the brakes were until driving my mates car. I did a check and when i turned the engine off whilst moving the braking didnt get any worse... it was still absolutely rubbish.

Now im quite mechanical with repairing motorbikes etc but ive never worked on a car, where the hell is the braking servo... was going to see if the vacuum pipe has come off etc.?

The brake servo is on the right hand side as you face the engine bay, it's connected to the pedal with a crossover linkage. It's the rather large round thing behind the brake master cylinder. The vacuum pipe is very obvious and comes out of the front.and goes to the inlet manifold. I think the brakes on these are pretty poor anyway. Best you can probably do (without a major upgrade) is to renew the brake fluid (if it's looking dark or has not been changed in a few years), check the discs, pads, and calipers are ok, and adjust the rear shoes and handbrake.

Press the pedal all the way down a few times with the engine off. It should get firmer. Press the pedal down and hold it then start the engine, it should sink as the vacuum operates. It would fail the MOT with a fault in the brake servo anyway.

ahh cool ill have a looksee later on. Should be a simple enough fix. I think the drums & pads are worn as well anyways so ill strip down the calipers & drums when i fit alloy wheels to it.

Ta again :)
