PS3 buying advice

Featured Replies

I did have a PS3 at one time, but flogged it to fund other adventures.....

With the arrival of a proper HD telly in the house, I'm drawn to the PS3 again.

Of course, they no longer make the 60Gb model, which was something of the technical sweetspot.

Given that all i ever did with it anyway was PS3 games and the odd blu-ray though......

do I:

a) Take a risk and buy a 2nd hand 60Gb of fleabay, with no warranty and watch it die after a month or two?

B) Buy the 80Gb model

c) But the cheapest/smallest model and then just swap out the HDD..........although from what i see, there is a negligible price difference between the 40 and the 80gb model??

The 40gb versions don't have vibrating controllers , plus the chipset is more power efficient in the 80 or 160gb versions.

60gb versions are getting long in the tooth and are overpriced so I'd avoid them and go for the best new bundle you can find.

or

d) do the right thing and get yourself an xbox 360! ;)

I have a 40gb version and I am more than happy with mine. :D

And then wonder why your Blu-ray films don't work

From my previous experience, I'd have to disagree. Two words: Heavenly Sword.

:P

I flogged the few blu-ray discs i had, but the player capability is a plus point. I sense a visit to town coming on.....

re: vibrating controllers.......i'm after a game machine, not a 'marital aid'......

If you're ever sarf ov da river, and are after a new 80GB PS3, let me know, I may be able to help :)

And wondering why you have the Red Ring Of Death.:rofl::rofl:

Red ring of death is now a thing of the past.

PS3s also have issues of their own and they also fail.

Anyone buying a PS3 to watch bluray films when you can buy proper bluray players with better pq for nearly half the price needs brain surgery.

I wouldn't advise someone to buy a PS3 *just* to watch blu-rays. For a while it was the best value player but there are now slightly better quality ones for less cash.

Nonetheless if you want a games console *and* HD films then a PS3 is a very good option and cheaper than a mid-spec X-Box and Blu-Ray player. It also gets you free online gaming and while it's apparently not as good a system as X-Box live it works just fine for me and millions of other people.

Also there's very few problems with the Playstation Network I've found. My mates all have Xboxes and all get annoyed when XBOX live goes down and it's a service they pay for.

Buy the 40gb and upgrade the HDD, I've got 250gb in mines.

I've got a 40gb one on eBay at the moment for £180 with a game - PM me if you can't find it and are interested :)

i have both systems and Xbox live is a lot better than playstation network . Granted you pay for it but overall its a much better online experience and psn has a long way to catch up . Also Xbox live is hardly ever down other than for server maintenance which is only 24hours every 6 months .

Are you that desperate to get one now?

The rumours are, that there will be a PS3 price drop in a couple of months time. That said, the same rumours are always around :)

Currys now sell a Bluray, Profile2.0 player for £99, so buying a PS3 for blueray no longer makes sense.

We bought a Samsung Bluray 2.0 Player for £160, and its an excellent player, and does everything including the proper HD audio, 24P and FullHD and also has wireless caperbility.

My PS3 is incredible, i love it to bits! It is never used for games minds but as a 'media' centre is excellent.

I have my media server upstairs that streams all of my films, music and downloaded tv content, i have the bluray/dvd player and i have just got the playtv box so now it has become by set top box and i can record, pause, rewind live tv etc. I also got the PS3 remote so its much easier to use.

Easily the best bit of electrical kit i have ever bought!

I'm pretty sure the price would still not be that low TBH.

At some retail outlets you're looking at paying almost double to get a PS3 compared to an Xbox360.

I'm currently giving some serious thought to getting an Xbox360 even though I've had both of the previous generation Playstations and it's purely down to price!

There's rumours going round of a new slimline PS3 to come out the same time as PSP Go or a short time after. The old ones should be going cheap then.

I bought a PS3, to me the Xbox 360 is a bit of a lame duck now though I['m sure plenty will disagree.

When a manufacturer starts hacking hundreds off the RRP its never a good sign for the shelf life of a console

Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox....

On another point, today the Xbox360 is exactly the same hardware wise bar the added HDMI port, as it was when released before the PS3.

However the PS3 has had its hardware spec reduced to such a level, that it no longer has half the features it had at release. The card reader has gone, the number of USB ports reduced, the HD size reduced, the ability to play PS2 games gone are just some. The cost of the console has however remained the same, so is no longer the value for money it once was.

As production costs reduce, so will the console price. the 360 has undergone a number of small reductions, and now its the turn of the PS3 which is still playing catchup in the console market.

It may have lost a couple of USB ports and a card reader but they are hardly core features and won't affect most people's enjoyment.

The lack of backwards compatibility is a bit of a shame , but I'm not sure how you work out that 80gb is less than 60gb?

The 40gb version has been discontinued quite a while back.

On the other hand the PS3 has also had some features introduced such as the vibrating controllers and various software and service improvements.

I have a 60GB so I still have all the features. However since I've had it I don't think I've played one of my PS2 games and even if I had one of the newer consoles and still wanted the PS2 compatibility I'd just hool up the PS2.

You are kidding right?

Of the community looking for a game console, you'll always find that only a certain proportion will buy it at a certain price tag. The lower the price, the greater the selling opportunity.

Games and accessories are far better for making money than consoles themselves, Microsoft chose hardware that was fairly similar to a PC, and im sure every week the 360 gets a touch cheaper to produce. Why not pass that back to the consumer, and rely on the games to make you money?

Nintendo started at a very good price anyway.

The PS3 is in a bit of a wierd situation. I know soo many people with them, who (like apinner) just buy them as a multimedia station, and bluray player. Great, but Sony dont see a direct return on any of those sales. The highly proprietry hardware also inflates prices. A real catch22, they need the return to lower the price, and they cant get it because of the price.

Im waiting for the PS3 to hit £200 before buying, but theres probably more chance of GT5 actually getting released (which is the game that will make me buy one)
