oct 1.9 tdi 90bhp goes into limp mode at 2200 rpm 65 mph

Featured Replies

hi,

first time threader long time viewer

i have an oct 1.9 tdi 90bhp (ALH engine ) and i am having a problem with the car going in to limp mode at 2200rpm 65mph, but the car runs absolutly fine town driving and i have a heavy right foot so it gets plenty of revs. :)

i have seen lots of threads about limp mode, but cant find one with this same problem that i am having.

also there seems to be air bubbles in the flow pipe in between fuel filter and fuel pump is this normal?

has anyone got any idears to help?

Hi

Sounds like sticky VNT mechanism in the turbo, basically full of baked on carbon. Some ALH 90bhp engines ARE fitted with this turbo, despite many people stating that these engines have a traditional wastegate turbo fitted (I know because mine is an ALH and is fitted with a VNT turbo!).

You need a diagnosis on VAG-COM to measure boost requested v actual readings. How far away from Nottingham are you? Greg123 has diagnostic equipment and stripping and cleaning VNT turbos are his speciality!! (plus he is a really nice bloke and very helpful and knowledgeable about Octavia's!)

It is unlikely you will need a new turbo - a strip and clean is all that is required.

thanks for that i will get it checked out.

there has been alot of threads about wastegate vales sticking but if i dont have one then thats one less thing to worrie about.

I had the same trouble for a while also. In My case it turned out to be a tiny split in a vacuum hose from the "Y" splitter. Got it fixed for a few cents,,and it's been great since..

My advice,,,,Before you go ripping apart Turbos and things,,check all your hoses and small things first...Might save you a small fortune!

yes that what is dose, but only on the motorway at about 2200 rpm 65mph because it will drive fine around town and a do hammer the throttle and changing gear about 3500 rpms.

That's exactly what mine did, I got very good at dropping to the inside lane making sure I had a big gap in front and behind, dipped the clutch and switched the ignition off & back on. It slowly got worse over a month then the engine mangement light would come on, fault code P0234 overboost condition.

still have not managed to get a vag fault code check done yet, but i have checked all and replaced all vac hoses.

i did have a problem while taking off one of the hoses , it snaped off the out let on the n75 valve and replaced it.

after driving it and testing the turbo cut out i found that the turbo cuts out under heavy load( hills, hard accelration and top speed)

That looks like a stuck VNT, causing an overboost condition.

Don't keep messing, get the codes read first and get whoever has VAG-COM to take the car up the road and give it a good blast upto at least 3000rpm in third to get a good reading of boost requested v actual. You get a nice fancy graph readout!!

Seriously though Greg123 at Nottingham (he is literally just off J26) will sort you out. Not sure where you are in the country but would be well worth the trip. He will drop you at the railway station in Nottingham and pick you up from there when the car is ready if you want him to sort it.

Keep us posted!

Greg123 also does a postal service with VNT strip and cleaning. If you can get someone to remove your turbo (or even remove yourself if you are brave/competent enough!) send it to him and he will return within a few days, all clean and ready to re-fit.

He does have a website and I will PM you the web address.

Good luck!

Dan

could you post that web address etc here? thanks :)

info update. i have the vag com done on the car and it came up with over boost condition error,

so for the last two days i have under took the big task of stripping the turbo out ouf the car , and following a step by step guide from MOLEY of VNT turbo cleaning. just put car back together and it works fine.

An excellent result!
