MK2 Golfs

Featured Replies

Thinking of getting a MK2 Golf for a project car to keep me busy over the winter months as getting a bit bored of the octy.

Anybody ever owned one.

yep,had one for 9.5 years,did the usual wheels,lowered,exhaust,different grille,rear light lenses.

i would say if you don't mind owning a LHD car then go to germany etc and source one as they are in better condition and have different models.

loved it to bits, did over 150,000 in it,always reliable never any trouble.

great fun to drive, not quite as much fun as a Mk1 Golf but very good.

G60 Edition 1 are very nice, and Jabba do a great stage 4 conversion up the power to 200+bhp!!!!

if not go for a 16V if you do get one as the extra power is much needed.

you might even pick up a Mk2 with a VR6 conversion, very good a bit front heavy but the engine noise makes up for that.

only sold mine to get a Corrado VR6.

I've got a mkII 8v gti 91 Balck, sunroof (project car) the problem is the projects taking a bit to long and the father in law is getting a bit disgruntled about using his workshop. I bought it of my mates wife (2 lady owners for the last 10 years)for

Had a 1990 16V for about 5 years. Splendid car. Had a Jetex exhaust, K&N filter & K-Star mapped fuel & ignition. Power didn't really come on tap until 4500rpm, but boy did it fly after that! (all the way to 7000rpm!). Had it lowered by 35mm & stiffened slighty & was planning to fit a rear ARB. Did a couple of track days & embarassed a few bigger engined cars.

Sold that with 147,000 miles on it & went onto a Corrado G60 which was even more fun!!!

Had one then another and another and a few more after that. Loved them so much i've still got 1 a black 3dr j plate (last of the last).

Really easy to work on and generally the mechanicals are bomb proof, the only snag now is that good ones are getting rare and the bodies are starting to go along the bulkhead, windscreen and rear arches.

I've done engine conversions on them from 16v, g60, vr6 and most recently a 1.8t.

My favorite on was a golf syncro which got a 2.0 16v engine (a bit of hassle) handled as well as the imprezza i had at the time and absolutely flew along.

Spend your money on the newest 1 you can afford and then go and enjoy, there absolutely brilliant

yea ive owned one, see my pics on my profile

what do u want to know mate?

Looking at getting a late-ish GTi 8v.

There is a mk3 GTi 8v at my mates breakers sitting there and he said i can have bits for work i help him out with, so the 2.0 8v engine and dash will be put into the mk2 along with what else i can make fit

thought about a Jetta chief ? Saloon car class and exclusivity

:rubchin:mmm :):):)Jetta :rubchin:

Yep had a few Mk2's in my time. Great cars. As has already been said trying to find a nice one is getting rarer. Go for the latest Big Bumper with rainbow trim, smoked rear lights etc you can find. Just watch for rot around the fuel filler, rear door and bottoms of the doors and U/S rear calipers are a common problem. Cars are very solid otherwise and very reliable.

If it's an engine conversion you want I wouldn't bother going to the hassle of a 2.0 8v conversion tbh. Go for the more tuneable 1.8 16v or if feeling adventurous the way to go these days is a 1.8T conversion......

Want to go for a euro look golf so no big bumpers or gti kit. Once done it will be my daily driver and the octy will be sold so want reliability more than speed. Will get another golf later on to do a 20vt conversion or S3 with the 4x4 system as well.

Rear calipers will not be a probles as the mk3 rear axle will go straight on.

golfs are brilliant, i spent a bomb on mine but it wasshow class by the end, from BBS split rimms to the leather recaro electric seats, mine was a late 8v. feel free to ask if you need to know anything mate

My previous 3 cars were new GTIs - 1600 Mk1, 1800 Mk1, 1800 Mk2. The Mk1s were imports (1981 & 1983). The Mk2 was 1989. Nearest sensible car I could get to fit my garage with similar hp was Fabia 2.0 ltr. Standard suspension a bit spongy, but passengers prefer it.

BTW Kenny, I have just bought a Pioneer DEH-77mp. It's very good, but do you know how to arrange connections so it operates like the standard radio - i.e. switches off with ignition but can be switched on after ignition key is removed?

My Skoda dealer couldn't provide me with a special key to remove the original radio from the dashboard. However, they let me trace theirs on a bit of paper. A junior hacksaw blade with teeth ground down and a notch at the end does the trick.

no idea mate, mine only works with the key in the ignition sorry i cant be of help
