I was a vRS driver at 17/18. Then changed to the Civic. I'm now on a little Clio as I'm not using my car these days.

I bet you're being killed on insurance.. £1900? £2200? ;)

Mums Insurance policy, Multi car discount, No claims, Named Driver, Protected No Claims, Fully Comp £1600 :)

Had A FIAT Punto for a bit, but got rid of that after I passed. Got a Skoda Fabia estate at 17, now 18 and want to change it for something else. Would like a vRS, but can't justify the insurance!

So I assume you don't drive it often?

Octy Vrs at 21 - 27 now and just got Mk2 Vrs

owned my vrs at 19... now 21... looking at a type r as we speak :D

i drove like that for a year also... the insurance at 17 was a joke...

a wee tip tho

make yourself the main driver and add your folks as secondary drivers... this also reduces the premium rather as going it solo

I woulda though this as well, but with my Directline policy the bloke on the phone added my parents and it went up (albeit slighty) so I would check that that is the case first. Can see both sides of the insurance firms agrument though, just wish saw the side I wanted.

try admiral and elephant... the best by a million miles for young drivers ;)

God know how you guys afford it!

Parents that give you money/buy you cars?!

My first car at 17 was a 94 'L' Polo Fox Coupe 1.0L and that's all I could afford and could just afford the insurance etc and petrol.

I then moved onto a 1995 Citroen ZX 1.9D and that cost about the same as the Polo.

I now have my Felly (I'm 23 and had the car over 2 years) and that costs me £400 p/a fully comp (got some points which doesn't help).

The only concevable way I could have had anything like a Fabia vRS at 17 would either be a loan with high APR or if my parents bought the bloody thing for me as I was still at college then.

This.

And the fact that had I had anything as powerful at that age I certainly wouldn't be here now

then again I suppose its more "how you drive" than "what you drive" :D

actually...

the less said about how I drive... the better!!

Bank manager

Lucky you VRS at 17, how do you manage the insurance? I was in a 1.0 Uno at that age and then it cost me a bomb;)

you're paying £1600 for a (presumably) dodgy policy on a Fabia vRS? fair play if that's what you want but paying that much to drive that car seems like madness to me...I got a pretty good quote from Greenlight for the Ibiza, pity (for you) they seem to have both the Fabia and Octavia on their list of excluded vehicles

I wouldnt say Dodgy.... :P

My parents do use it, ok I am technically the main driver...

But its 1600 or 5000....

You decide.... Once I hit a few years no claims I shall get my own policy :)

Plus everyone does it!! Regardless of what car you drive at my age! 1.2 clio on my own policy would cost 2000!

Oh and it is an insane car to drive at this age! :D

Also, lets just say the brakes have saved me from a few near misses, cameras and plenty of tight corners :P

You really aren’t helping younger drivers out here with comments like that. I myself would learn from your above comments and slow down. I wouldn't risk my life on fabia brakes.

In regards to philje123. I will be honest - I sold my old car to add to my savings money. The car was then taken out on Finance for a 3 year plan.

I couldn't have done a worse job in my A levels.

I needed to get into university so went to a new college for a fresh start. I then worked my a$$ off during the week making websites and on weekends at a petrol station.

I used ever little bit of money I got for my birthdays and Christmas towards my car. I paid rent/keep every week. This all paid off meaning that my car was mine. It was only the fact that some twonk damaged my car that I sold it and moved onto the type R.

I did the same process with the type R and I'm now using the money to pay for all my university fees and house costs for this year.

I have friends that get everything they ever wanted just given to them. I'm sorry but I have worked damn hard over time to get where I am today.

I would hate for people to genralize.

Hope this helps,

Rob.

It'd be boring if we all took the same approach to life wouldn't it? :)

Horses for courses, and we do need people to keep spending at the moment...

How some people rationalise the decisions they make and the things they buy is sometimes beyond me, but then again it's their decision not mine. I'm in the camp of working hard for your money and using it wisely, e.g. not on huge insurance premiums. Good things come to those who wait ;)

Just got a quote for my girlfriend's brother, 17, provisional license, 1.4 Fabia Comfort, fully comp.... £800

I really hope the police stop you, because you are committing insurance fraud and making the prices go up for the rest of us
