Thud when in traffic, ideas?

Featured Replies

Car has done 53k and is an 04 plate. as far as history goes no evidence of any drive train parts replaced yet.

Having been in slow moving stop start traffic for a short while, and going 1st, 2nd, 1st...stop....1st, 2nd,... stop.... etc, I get a quiet dull thud after going from 1st to 2nd, and vice verser. Not 2nd to 3rd, or 3rd to 2nd etc.

Once traffic flows again it's fine.. it's only when sat in traffic. Having the clutch to the floor doesn't help.

Is this anything to worry about, or is it just the syncro's a little worn. 1st to 2nd has never been as smooth as say, 3rd into 4th.. but it's not rough, just needs an ever so slight more delicate touch.

It's always done it, just thought I'd see if

A. anyone elses did it, or

B. anyone knew what it was?

Thanks - Rob.

When *exactly*? Is when you release the clutch again?

No, clutch to floor, pull gear stick from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st and is immediately followed by a quiet dull thud. then bring clutch back up.

Only happens when stuck in traffic, and not straight away.. could it just be the gear box oil getting a bit warm?

maybe a bit of clutch drag? Does it crunch into reverse?

The other thing is maybe this is the 'grease the engine mount' thing?

No, No Reverse crunch.

However, the engine mount may well be the culprit! After getting the suspension repaired in Feb from kerb damage my Mechanic said on the 1st test drive it was clonking when pulling away in traffic... and that he'd found the engine mount was loose, had tightened it up and that now it was fine.... perhaps that's worked loose again and needs tightening.... hmmmmmmm....

surely it'd do this every time a gear went in though?

I've just done a little searching in the direction you pointed me..

Sounds suspiciously like I need to grease the gear box mount under the battery on the N/S inner wing.. This is where the noise could be perceived to be coming from and is also the corner I clouted in the snow.. sounds like a dead cert to me!

hope it is this, as grease is cheap! ;)

Thanks Chris!

mine does this, 54 plate 52 k on clock. think something clunks off the exhaust heat shield of somit sometimes. . . gears r quite heavy in traffic situations like you described . . i just assumed it was normal. let us know when u fix it :)

btw my name is also rob. :) BOOM!
