Poorly VRS LE!

Featured Replies

Well I have just covered 1500 miles in the TSI VRS LE, loving every minuite of it until......

Went for an overtake and the engine bogged down in 2nd gear at around 4000 Rpm, so i let off and then carried on driving at a normal speed and all was well. For the rest of the day no problems what so ever.

Last night, driving on the motorway in 6th, accelerated to get past some numpty and started misfiring, let off again and was fine the rest of the way home. (20 Miles or so)

Today, gave it some stick on a dual carriage way and it misfired at around 4000 Rpm, this time kept my foot to the floor to see if it would clear through and it very slowly accelerated but almost as though the turbo had been disconnected?

Anyone got any ideas?

I dont know if this could be connected, or perhaps even normal, but when you turn the air conditioning on the engine makes a not too nice grunting sort of noise which dissapears as the engine revs a little. Its not the idle speed increasing, i can only describe the noise as a grinding moaning sort of noise?

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Doesn't sound good. Could be a dodgy MAF or coil pack if not something more serious. Thankfully you'll be under warranty of course.

doesnt sound right, would defo call the dealer and get the car into the workshop

ditto I dont know about the other points you have raised, must admit doesn`t sound too good  But the last point , I have notice similar on mine............When the revs are just above idle I do sometimes get a grating type noise from the front of the engine ie on a hill start, but goes as the revs are increased............... I hope you get the other points sorted soon

I would think that if other LEs have noisy air con pumps then it isnt just a problem with mine, either that or all LE owners will be getting a letter in the post with an aircon pump recall!

Just been out in the car, warmed it up, gave it some welly and no problems at all....Very strange!

My good friend James at Allams is booking me in for either this saturday or next for the problem with the engine cutting out, i will ask the techs to listen to the aircon pump aswell, will keep you updated as to whether it is a problem, or perhaps that is just what the aircon pump sounds like?

Coil Pack .... it's worth checking them, anybody near you with VAG-Com, daft as it sounds but that's what mine ran like before a coil pack failed (I had 3 go in total, but mine was an early Mk2 and the coil packs have gone through many revisions since)

Ill be honest, ive havent heard my air con being noisey at all, ive been using it quite a lot over the last few days.

  • 3 months later...

Had mine do exactly the same on Saturday. Second gear, motorway onramp, accelerate hard and it bogged down precisely around 4500 rpm.

Drove normally and nothing happened.

Then same on motorway, trying to accelerate hard to fill a space in the fast lane and overtake a middle-lane numpty driver. Scary as the guy behind got close and the car bogging down was almost as if I'd hit the brakes

I've noticed the car doesn't seem to have the same get-up-and-go, almost as if the turbo's not pressuring correctly (I can hear it spooling fine though). Occasionally I do feel the turbo holding pressure and the car feels distinctly faster, but whilst this was consistent before, it now seems the exception rather than the norm. Until Saturday I was putting this down to me having gotten used to the power of the car, but not sure anymore!

Mine's also a LE, TFSI, with 2900 on the clock. Never had any problems before, or since.

I'm ringing my dealer today. Anyone, any ideas? Coil packs on a 3000 mile car? Would this show up on VAG-COM?

I opened the bonnet and saw on the intake manifold, the plastic bit, there's an open hose connector to the right (as when looking down at the engine), only no hose there  Should there be anything attached to it? I'll try to get a pic tonight.

Sound very similar to Brown_d9 problem..........I wonder if theres a common fault here..looking forward to an update just for reference obviously....hope u get the problem sorted and quickly nothing worse when you cant rely on the power in the car especially on a motorway.

Please delete my post

Are you sure the noise on tick-over is the aircon pump? I had a sort of groaning knocking noise on mine and it was a shield on the exhaust but it didnt sound like it was from inside the car, it sounded more like it was coming from behind the dash (thank goodness it wasnt the dash, I wouldnt want that removed and re-fitted!).

Hope you get it all sorted though, things like this really take the edge of a nice new motor - I know, ive had loads of agro with my Wifes Honda....

ATB, Jon.

Ok, managed to take some pics... On one hand the polished black seems to indicate something was attached to it at one point, on the other hand I can't see any hose around? Is this just a venting outlet? Perhaps excess pressure?

What is this plastic housing? A plenum?

Can anyone with an LE or late FSI engine (mine's CCZA) quickly check their see if they have anything connected to this outlet?

Got the car booked in for Thursday morning, initially just to connect the computer to.

On a different note, drove back home with ESR switched off, and the car seemed definitely faster. Dunno what to think, could be placebo or maybe there are leccy gremlins lurking in the bay

Looks normal to me.................heres some I`ve just taken

30565.attach

30566.attach

30567.attach

Thanks a_Duncan. I've since found the technical manual on here somewhere and noticed the diagram there has the outlet too with nothing connected to it. How bizarre?

PS: Looks like you're about to run a tad low on coolant?

Hey.... its only the second time I`ve looked at the engine........wheres the coolant..whats it for?? do you put washing-up liquid in it...........only joking, hope all goes well at the garage

Topped up......cheers

Does sound like an ignition fault.

Really sorry to hear about the problems, which hopefully can be sorted quickly. I've done 2,700 miles in mine with no probs yet, and certainly no noise related to the air-con which does sound odd.

As to the TSI engine, it isn't one that is unique to the LE, but the first batch of what is now fitted to every new vRS (which is why in my eyes the LE hybrid is actually a lot closer to the facelift than the older MkII given that the internal radio/dash controls are also the same as the new facelift, so only the old front end lights/grill are the old MkII). Oh, and yeah, my engine looks like yours in the pics too with the pipe etc...

Good luck with the fix mate, keep us all posted...

Car drove brilliantly today, with ESR back on. I felt the boost was there and car was again feeling nippier. No misfires or anything.

I don't have any air-con noise at idle. Sure, the engine ticks a bit at idle, maybe too much compared with other petrol engines I know of, but since I never heard another TSI running, I take it to be normal. Probably a result of being chain driven which is naturally noisier than a cambelt. Inside the car it is dead quiet tho :)

Can't wait for Thursday. I suspect ignition fault too, and am particularly worried with any unburnt fuel having made its way to the catalytic converter :( Don't want to fail an MOT on emissions 3 years down the line, AFTER the warranty expired!

Hi all,

Update on my problem(s). Just been back from the dealership. Car is driving well, but computer accused a sporadic fuel pressure fault. A test-drive ensued and no problems to report, so got a report for the fault, and told to monitor it. If it happens again, call back and they'll book the car in for a couple of days and get me a courtesy vehicle.

Basically, fuel could be cutting out due to pressure. Also, that could be the reason it didn't feel like it was boosting at times, ECU would compensate by dumping boost to avoid leaning mixture out?

Car has also had its software upgraded (64B8 campaign, something to do with the front door controls?)

Told them about a rattly/raspy exhaust note noticeable around the 2-3k rpm mark, especially when coming off the throttle. Noted, verified, but again they're not sure if it's a problem or a characteristic of my engine. Any other vRS TSI drivers please chip in on this one!

Brilliant service and not a bill in sight. Another great experience from Progress Skoda Letchworth, I definitely recommend them

Meanwhile, I ogled the Yeti they were bringing in to the showroom. TDI 140 CR 4x4 Elegance in Muscovado with Gobi Sand leather. Car looks absolutely gorgeous  Will post my blackberry pics on the Yeti forum.

Great that the problem seems to have been identified, one question though - how did they think this was linked to the grinding sound you identfied with the aircon?

Oh, and no, not noticed and rattly exhaust note myself at any time - in fact my only criticism of the sound of the TSI vRS is that it is far too polite!

I never had have any strange air-con noises, but I think the OP did. Unsure what's up with that as he did not update back.

The rasp note is only on lifting the throttle, almost as if the cat was rattling inside. I've actually stood outside while someone revved up the engine while stationery and you can barely hear the rattling. It's really something you hear more inside the car, so exhaust note remains far too polite

Oh dear, engine cut out again, twice. On one occasion, I couldn't even keep up when overtaking an old Astra 1.6 and had to abort and go behind it. Massive drop in power felt and engine simply would not accelerate

It seems the problem is most noticeable when I slowly accelerate through the rev range, build up boost, speed, then at around 4-4.5k floor it. It starts flying and then shortly after loses power :(

Already spoke to the dealership, we'll get it booked in for when they can get me a courtesy car.

MAF issue - had the same thing on a Punto Multijet a few months back.

Sorry it has been so long since I replied to my own thread, rude I know!

My car still has the slightly noisy air-con pump which isnt really bothering me that much, it is booked in for a 10,000 mile service on Saturday, so I will ask them to have a look then.

As for the bogging down, where do you fill up with fuel? Random question I know, but bare with me....
