To tint or not to tint, that is the question..

Featured Replies

I have a black vRS hatchback and I'm thinking about having the rear windows tinted. I've seen a couple of tinted cars although both were estates and I think it looks good.

I am concerned about a couple of things:

With my lowered car on BBS wheels will the tints make it look more bling which may get it nicked/broken into/keyed

What's the visibility like? It's always good to see what's behind you incase it's plod. Also I'll be doing a couple of trackdays and want to be sure that the visibility won't be hindered too badly

I think I'm more worried about it being scratched/keyed etc if it looks "too" good.

What are your thoughts? Cheers

Black cars with a subtle tint IMO look great especially the VRS estate. I saw a race blue VRS hatch (same as mine) the other day with tints and it just simply didn't look right to me.

Have you thought about going down the sunshades route? (a search will get you all the info). I've got these and think they are great. The added bonus being they take 5 secs to remove should you want to for parking up in chav areas or for track use.

Save your money and spray the windows black :)

I have thought about shades but it's tints or standard for me. And as for spraying the windows black... I might do that on my Corsa with 8 exhausts ;)

IMO a car that has tints is no more likely to get broken into than one that doesn't.

I had sunset glass on my last VRS and I wish I had it on my new one.

I would definitely have it done if I was you, but dont go too dark

Cheers

Will this tinting affect auto dimming mirror ?

No idea, I don't have one :)

I would never bother with tints after having sun blinds - I think they look a bit more classy :)

Being an engineer I can say having tints make your car much more noticeable, and the question buzzing round the scroats head will be "what are they trying to hide from me?". It's why vans get broken into - scroats take a bet there's something nice inside that they cant see.

Every engineer I know with them suffers regular issues with break-ins and damage to locks. Dont have them, and I've never had any issues - even when parking in some really dodgy areas!

Also not keen, as many cars simply look like drug dealers or pimps own them.

Get a light tint, maybe light smoke, thats what I have on my black fabia. also if they were to smash the glass the film would help to stop them getting in. check out the video on south coast tints.

Ah yes, forgot to mention, I'm a drug dealer pimp

LOL, then get some to match the 20" chrome wheels with spinners

:confused:That was my downfall when I got mine - I'm not an engineer, so didn't realise - doh

That's giving most of them the credit for being able to think !

Don't normal people you know suffer from the same issues then, or do they just target engineers ?

:) = me before the tints were fitted :fro: = me after the tints were fitted

Either I'm sensing deja vu, or the needle's stuck in the record

I think you know which I prefer !

So I've been unlucky. Does that mean we have to succumb to the scrotes and have boring-looking (sorry non drug-dealer looking) cars, with no variety from one to another ?

Wouldn't that make car shows interesting ? We'd all turn up to shows and say "Hey - you've got a car that looks exactly the same as mine". Response - "So I have, but mine's a different colour to yours".

And so a great few minutes was had by all.

LOL

Estates are the tool of many an engineer, and Skoda's are no different. The VRS is also popular, so as far as a scraot knows the tints are hiding tools, laptops, expensive items they can sell for drugs etc etc.

For coppers I know, the advice is dont have them unless you like to stand out. Park 5 identical cars, one with tints in a crime hotspot with nothing on display, and the tinted car would be more likely to get hit.

Sadly becuase this country is policed by Wombles and C.h.i.m.p.s. scroats are rampant any know they wont get caught.

Like someone said, I was in a nice German town multistory, and almost every car had their satnav still on the screen mount on full view. The Crimes this month sign in the carpark read ZERO!

So what's the crack with these sunblinds then? Do they integrate into the doorcards like the Audi ones?

I quite like Germany. So clean and shows this hole of a country up!

Yeah but in Germany, you're likely to get shot by the police if you try anything funny!

Bloody good reason for arming the rozzers then ! ;)

And the answer to my other point is ????? sadly missing

I'll add my 2ps worth of off topicness.

I lived in Munich for 14 months a few years ago and it was awesome. I never found any area that felt remotely dodgy at any time of night. Talking to people there, it was apparent that crime was simply unheard of. The police were armed, even the ones on the subway who were essentially glorified ticket inspectors, but I don't think that's got much to do with it. It's just a better, more respectful society from top to bottom.

Brits coming back from Germany and Switzerland, etc. often talk about these countries being clean. It's true and I think in a very large part due to the attitude of the populace. Britain is unfortunately full of littering, fly tipping, lay-about scum. I really despair about this country - it's embarassing. If it wasn't for family ties, I think I would leave permanently.

Not necesarilly (spelling?)

A guy over on Detailing World had his Range Rover broken into, the glass was smashed and the tint was torn. Took all of his I.C.E and the police had to wake him, to tell him his car had been broken into!
