Ruined tyre and rim damage

Featured Replies

Got forced (by a van) to the edge of a narrow B road today, where the tyre/wheel made contact with a piece of rock/concrete jutting out from the dirt verge. End result = gash in the sidewall and a small amount of flattening of the rim.

I know the tyre will need replacing, which was a new F1 asymmetric 2 months ago. But does anybody know if the rim will need repairing. The damage is small, <10mm, where the smooth edge of the rim has been pushed flat. I can't see any cracks in the alloy, although haven't got the tyre off yet.

I've seen previous posts, but am I likely to be able to claim from the council for the offending verge?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

P.S. Stuck to the 50mph limit of the space saver and improved my 32mile communte mpg to 53, usually around 42, don't think the fuel saving will make up for the price of repairs though.

if its only 10mm and not gone far it should be alirght, though without seeing at least a picture its hard to say

Is the wheel/tyre in your vRS a space saver? Mine is a 205/55/16 and it still says MAX 50MPH all over it! Ridiculous!

Simple answer is that you'll never know until you put a tyre on it and inflate it - some surprisingly big looking dings remain airtight, and some tiny ones p**s air all over the show. Problem can get worse or better with travel as well, as the air pressure increases (making leaks more likely) when the tyre heats up under load, but the metal expands too, meaning that in some cases the leak will be less when the wheel is warm!

The only solution is to take it to a tyre fitter, get a tyre fitted to the wheel and have it inflated and checked. If it's fine then put it on but keep an eye on it. If it leaks then at least you know!

Thanks for the advice, got it to a fitter today. They thought the rim was OK on initial inspection, though didn't get chance to pick it up after work, however no calls to suggest any problems.

Shall, as advised, keep an eye on it when I get it back.

My space saver is also the standard 205/55 R16 steel wheel.(The same as SWMBO's standard focus tyre/wheel, but that's allowed to do more than fifty).

Part of my commute is on the A38 in Devon, part of which has a temporary 50mph limit with average speed camera's for roadworks at night ('but we'll still speed check you during the day when no roadworks are taking place').

Had a few interesting moments as I left the roadworks and didn't accelerate away, while the people behind obliviously tried to rear end the car, think space savers should all come with a flashing amber light and a slow moving vehicle sign.

I dented a rim on some aftermarket alloys and i took it to 2 different places to get it repaired and both said "no" because it will break the alloy and split if they attempted to repair it.

Cut a long story short i passed an advertising hording for alloy wheel repairs and took the alloy in and said yes no problem its either £40 for the repair and no paint or X amount for the spay to match the rest of the wheels.

company i used was lap-tab in birmingham - perfect.

As people have said depending on the ding the tyre might stay up. Mine suffered depending on if the ding was at the top or bottom when i parked it and i got sick of inflating the tyre every few days.

Side wall damage I'd always replace unless just a scuff.

Do to many miles to risk things.

That's a full-size spare, not a space-saver. The 50mph limit sticker is only there as an ar$e covering for Skoda, in case you've been a numpty and not fitted it properly, or not tightened wheel bolts properly. Thinking is that if a spare does come off, you're 'only' doing upto 50

Definitely replace the tyre, but you knew that already. The alloy - as said, post a pic up, but if I were in your shoes I'd take it down to a reputable refurb place and get their opinion.

I've got a skoda superb, and drive over a pot hole yesterday. Tried re-inflating the tyre, with that 'rubber solution spray stuff', and it was leaking out of the side of the tyre and wheel. Tyre/rim size - 205/45/27.

I am in the NW London area, so would appreciate if someone can recommend a reputable cheap repairer ?.

I tried removing the wheel, but 2 of the bolts are rounded. So i'm stuck....

Thanks in advance.

I picked up the new tyre on Monday, has held pressure so far, but will keep an eye. Dent in the alloy doesn't look so bad now, probably cos the tyre is nice and shiny new.

Will post a pic if I get chance but hopefully I was lucky and it hasn't interfered with the seal of the tyre.

Thanks for all the advice.
