Service

Featured Replies

I was under the assumption the car had a service light? Only i ain't ever seen it yet.

I have an 03 vrs estate, with 9000 miles on it. I would have swore it should have been serviced by now?

What's the crack with this variable/fixed servicing? How do i know what mine is?

You'll get an indicator saying eg service or whatever next to your mileage when it's ready. If you don't see anything then I guess that you're set to variable and your car doesn't need one yet.

If your on variable servicing, the car will tell you when it needs a service. Mine is on 11k, and yet to ask.

You can check what service set up your car is eligible by the log book as denoted relevent code (think its QG1, but a search will bring up the answer).

Alternately you could visit your dealer who would tell you, or someone with VAGcom.

The unfortunate thing is that even if your car is listed as set to variable in your handbook the dealer can swap it over before you take delivery.

If you've done 9k+ then I think it's a safe bet that they haven't touched it.

Have a look in your car's Service Schedule. Just beneath the Delivery Inspection Record on page 11 is a box called Next Service which should have the mileage and date of the next service (whichever comes first), and might also say 'Variable' as mine does. The odds are that your car is on variable servicing and will tell you when it needs a service.

Does the service light stay on until it gets serviced? Ie: i haven't missed it......

The service display appears in the trip counter display on startup and disappears after about 20 seconds. Mine first indicated Service in 800 miles and then counted down every 100 miles IIRC. It is all explained on page 64 of the Owner's Manual in the section about the speedometer.

Yup - service book says QG1 - so variable it is ;)

Just seems a bit odd owning the car from new, now having 9000 odd miles on and not even having to change the oil?

Assuming that you have been topping up the engine with the correct LongLife oil, your car can go up to 2 years/20,000 miles before it needs its first inspection service and oil change - unless the service indicator indicates that a service if needed sooner.

Er.... Fortunatly it hasn't dropped to need topping.

What's the best place to get longlife oil from and any associated costs?

Hows the oil differing from normal oil? Thicker or summit?

A man after my own heart. Yes it's thicker. :D

Either that, or you have upset an admin/mod :D

IIRC

Turn on the ignition so the warning lights come on (do not start the engine)

Press and hold in the main trip reset, after about 5 seconds the distance to next service is shown.

Does that apply to variable services too?

Hang on I will just go on check on the Touran (yes I know its a bus !) that is on variable........................................................................... Yup, Odometer says 9100, service says 7300, so I guess that works then.

The Skud worked in exactly the same way.

[sigh] I come back here once in a while & realise that I do miss that car !

But I suppose I could always let Jabba have a look at the Touran, 2.0 TDI, 140Bhp & 310 Nm as std, I wonder what Mike could do here !!

We will see after 1st service maybe.

Just tried this. Didn't work

Ah! Just had a thought. Did you mean the one on the stalk or the one where the speedo is?

Nope - mine didn't work either......

Going back to my other question - what's different with the oil?

The one where the speedo is !!

The display returns to zero for a few seconds then displays the service distance, goes back to previous trip setting when released.

Doesnt work here....just resets the trip to zero

In the case of your car it is a spec VW 503 00 fully synthetic 0W-30 long-life oil which has been specially formulated for longer service intervals, ie up to 20,000 miles. You will find a list of oils meeting that spec in our FAQs.

Works on my wifes Polo (6.5k on the clock, 19.5k till next service. Dealer reckoned it was on fixed  ). Only difference was that I had the door shut when I tried it. Haven't got mine this week so I'll have to wait and see.

OK, update.

For my Superb, you need to press and hold the trip reset button whilst turning on the ignition to the run position (which resets the trip) but then you get a message in the matrix display in the middle, and mine says "Service now".

It is supposed to be variable service as per the QG1 in the book (although the dealer stamp says 10k or 1 yr), but no messages have been displayed at ignition start up...so..... is this just an incomplete information snippet, or does the bloody thing actually need its service now?

ps it has 11k on the clock after 18 months.

pps..door had to be closed, seat belt in.

ppps..Just spoke to service dept at dealer, and the words given were " keep driving it until the car gives you the service now when you start it up."
