Rattle - when closing door

Featured Replies

Hi

My 2004 Octavia VRS has developed an annoying rattle/vibration when closing the doors.

It only appears to make the noise if I close the boot, near side doors, or bonnet (not the offside doors)

The noise appears to come from under the bonnet. Towards the nearside front corner

I know this sounds vague but any ideas?

Cheers

Rad mounts

PITA too change. I still need to do mine

I am thinkin the same.

and I need to do mine still lol.

I have another rattle that comes from the back drivers side in the rear wheel arch and cant think what it is as I had the liners out to replace them and clened it all up. must be something to do with the fuel tank pipe????

I noticed that the mk1 is not the sturdyest of cars as far as rattles and things but it is very reliable and cheap so it kind of balances out lol.

my old mk4 astra V reg was 6 yr old when i got the vRS and after 6 month the vRS had more rattles than my astra lol. but the astra new was around 13-14k and the vRS I got for 13.5 wi extras lol so I wasnt bothered lol

all the best mate

sound like worn radiator mounts to me,mine did it when i closed any door & going over rough road surfaces.my radiator moved a good inch or so if you got hold of the bottom of it & moved it in & out,i put pipe foam inbetween the rad & crossmember as a short term cure(that was a year ago!!:)) i know some people on here have changed them & its a bit of a pig of a job only to find it comes back in a few months!

Thanks for the quick replies,

Just been out to the car to have a look, if I grab the bottom of the radiator there is some play in it. I am assuming this shouldn’t move at all!

On closer inspection, (well crawling around and wedging my head under the bonnet) it appears that the noise is coming from somewhere under the battery area. If the rad mounts are on the way out could this be an associated rad pipe knocking as per previous suggestion?

Any idea how much the rad mounts cost to replace?

mikey_vrs, could you possibly post a pick of your pipe foam fix?

Meanwhile, I'd have to agree with claytarget. The Octy mkI has many great qualities but a rattle free ride is not one of them. Personally, I find that turning up the stereo is the only real solution.

It's around a tenner for the mounts for four of them. But it will be the bottom two.

You may find the lug on the rad itself worn as well I'm working on a fix for this but as yet ain't had time too try it.

It's a bumper off job and then you too stand there swearing and asking yourself why you bothered, whilst scratching your head thinking how the **** do those mounts fit. Although I'm told it can be done.

I'm just a tard lol

works for me

I've modified the pipe foam fix lol

I used a little bit of gaffer tape to compress the foam so it's tight, them double sided tape to stick it in place, as the foam on it own shifts about too much.

I'll get you a photo lunch time if you like .

Cheers fatty5000, that would be great.

Sounds like the Foam solution is the way to go then,

I don't suppose the haynes manual covers the replacement of the rad mounts does it?

Or has anyone done a photo guide that explains the replacement.

the haynes manual will tell you how to remove the front bumper & headlamps etc,if you follow the radiator removal section as a guide (not draining the coolant or removing the rad though)this will help you to change the mountings:thumbup:as for my foam fix it was meant to be a tempary repair(1 year now!)all i did was wedge some roll cage padding that i had left over from building a a rallycar in between the bottom of the rad & crossmember, its not really a repair, more a working bodge!:) i will get round to replacing them,as in earlier posts the parts arent expensive but its a pig to replace them! however nowts impossible so id just allow yourself some extra time & with a bit of patience you will be fine!

Well noticed a rattle on mine tonight so thought I would check, I also seem to have worn rad mounts, the thing moves quite a bit. What with this and the lumbar support the car is rather a pain in the ****, or is that the back? :thumbdwn:

Yeah, thought about trying to fix the mechanism, but seems pricey from a dealer and wouldn't fancy doing it myself. Seems round here vRS spec cars being broken is rare. OK if you run a taxi though as loads of yellow TDIs about.
