Fitted a new Thermostat

Featured Replies

Yesterday I fitted a new thermostat (bought from Jorily and delivery really quick!! A***), on reading the haynes manaual I realised that Im supposed to fit new sealing washers and sealant to the coolant drain plugs when I use them to empty the system before refilling. I didnt have any, nor did I know which to get without having to take them out and drain the system leaving me with no transport to get to halfrauds or similar to buy new ones so I just took a chance.

I removed the stat and housing with the system still filled, of course I expected there to be a loss of coolant from the system when I removed it so was prepared with a huge roll of industrial paper towel. As the unit is right near the top of the system I didnt think it would be too much of a problem to remove it and then top the system back up to the required level.

Anyway, pulled off the old unit in about 2 minutes flat, spent 10 mins mopping up the resulting watery mess and then refitted the new unit in 2 more minutes (ish) and job done!!! Topped up the system then ran car for 10 mins to recirculate coolant squeezing tubing to make sure there wasnt too many bubbles in the system and now the Felly tells me the correct temp again!

Not exactly the correct way to do it but it seems to have worked and the guage is reading 90 like it should for a change!

Woohoo!

IME Haynes are very precious about replacing sealing washers which are good for several shots every time they're disturbed.

Why didn't you just drop the bottom hose off, that is what I did when I did my thermostat?

Well I suppose i could have done that, but hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Yes, what Ken said - I don't think I've fitted a new sealing washer in my life. At worst a bit of Teflon tape or some Boss-white will do it.

No choices with the diesel - thermostat is at the bottom hose:eek:

Change the thermostat and just top up after...I wish:rolleyes:
