Squealing Tyres? Sounds like I am driving like a loon but I'm not!

Featured Replies

This hot weather lately has been giving my car a few problems. Since yesterday the passenger side window has been squeaking, I searched here and found that I should try some silicone spray, that's one problem out of the way.

Since I have had the windows down in this weather I have been able to hear more noise from outside the car, and most of it appears to be coming from my tyres! I've only just recently bought my car second hand, it's been fine for the past 6 months, the only squeals I got were as a result of me pushing the car too hard on a roundabout. The tyres have plenty of life in them, but with this hot weather they have been squealing embarrassingly on pretty much every turn, no matter how I am driving.

Time for new tyres?

What tyres have you got on?

Time for some air, more like! Sounds like under-inflation to me.

Unless the hot weather has brought out hordes of mating hedgehogs or frogs or summat and it's their death cries you're hearing?

Christ knows. Probably 4 of the cheapest all unmatching knowing my luck. Will check.

Filled them up last week, 34psi all round, didn't have any problems till the temperatures started reaching 30C!

I recently got pulled over by the police for allegedly screeching my tyres turning right at a set of traffic lights! I was driving very carefully as I had a drumkit and passenger in the car. Tyres were 31psi all round with plenty of tread. I pumped them up to 33psi just in case. Very hot day.

could be your tracking is out - are the tyres wearing evenly?

heat makes the tyres softer, its a simple as that, my tyres squeal a lot easier what warm than when cold, especially with a nice warm road

I'd agree, tracking is the most likely cause (speaking from recent experience) if tyre pressures are OK, but also what make of tyre as some are more prone to squeal than others?

Make is most critical to squeal IMO. I found Pirelli P Zeros on the Fabia were prone to it a lot more than the Bridgestones and Toyos that followed them. All about the compound I suppose :)

If you don't know what brand you're running that's probably the issue ;) - they'll possibly be Ditchfinders of some description!

Hasn't happened today so must be a combination of heat and unsuitable tyres.

I currently have 17" Alloys (I think), and I think Skoda do 18" alloys (VRS?). If I were to get 18" alloys, and good quality low profile tyres, would that improve the handling? Would I also need to change anything to do with power steering, or the onboard computer, or suspension, etc, to put the bigger wheels on?

If you fitted 18s with the correct tyre size it should all be OK. However, the lower profile tyre will make the ride harsher.

If it's just the squeal you are bothered about, just fit different tyres next time.

You think you have got 17" alloys and you don't know what brand/model tyres you have.

May I politely and respectfully suggest that you check these points before thinking about embarking upgrading to 18" alloys etc.

In all honesty though; if you have got 17" alloys with, presumably, 225/45 17 tyres (correct size for the Octavia) then these will be perfectly fine for your 1.9 Elegance. If you want to start improving the handling etc. IMHO you should start on shock absorbers and then a rear anti-roll bar. 17" alloys are perfectly adequate - I prefer to run my vRS on 17s for IMHO the best handling and ride combination.

PS> Please do check your present wheels/tyres and tell us all what they are size/brand/model and tread depth; we can then offer you some positive thoughts.

  • 1 month later...

Had this on 2 days recently in our 2.0 TDI when negotiating roundabouts. Really wasn't pushing at all - felt ok though, wasn't like I was experiencing understeer because I was pushing too hard. Initially thought it must be tyre pressures (although I check them at least once a fortnight, when cold) but they were all spot-on. Both days were warmish (about 20 deg C) and had been hotter so I guess the road temperature might've been quite a bit higher. Tread is fine - Michelins all round (205/60/15)- and no off road excursions to have knocked the tracking/ alignment out of sorts. MoT (1st)and service due within a month so will see if they can offer any explanation....

how are you applying that silicone spray, presumable window down bend the seal out and spray??

and does it not leave smears on the windows. i have 3 windows squeeling that right now

If you have got 17" then likely also have sports suspension, so that's the handling sorted ;)

What PSI are you using? I use 32, and if checking when hot, use 35psi. Good tyre wear, and no noise. Tyres Michelin Primacy Sports
