1.9 tdi turbo doesnt seem to kick in

Featured Replies

Hi new to this, so dont know if there is already a thread or not any way my question is:

The turbo o my car 1.9 fabia 1 tdi doesnt seem to kick in, at some rare points it does but mostly not, ther is no noise, and

Any ideas why this could be

Thank You

Sham

Either sticky VNT, control solenoid or split vacuum hose i'd say..

Kev

Sounds like the turbo is playing up and it is going into limp mode, due to many things ie MAF fault, EGR blocked, Intercooler holed, intercooler pipes loose or holed. They are the normal things that have caused this problem and are shared by many Briskodians.

You really need to get someone with VAG-COM to look at the car.

I don't understand what you mean above- you say the car doesn't lose power but above (in your first post) you say the turbo doesn't seem to kick in??

What *exactly* is wrong with the car?

If it just performs badly all the time, it could be a MAF problem- that's an easy DIY fix.

To test this, unplug it. If it then stays the same or gets better, the MAF is faulty.

If it boosts the sometimes loses power, then the Jabbasport post provides the likely suspects.

as well as not hearing any spool up of the turbo and you dont feel it kick in, Have you noticed anything else? excessive smoking from the exhaust?

it could be one of many things as already stated, but cjb mentioned vag-com to help diagnose it. A good starting point

there is no exesive smoke, the car seems absolutly fine apart from turbo kicking in, thats what i dont understant the car is fine, if the turbo had gone then the car would not have power but it still does

Would also be worth checking the air mass metre , a common fault on the 1.9 tdi & not that exspensive.

I'm still not with you. What's wrong then?

If the turbo is not working at all the car will still drive smoothly but on reduced power.

If it the turbo is working on and off, sometimes you will have power and sometimes not so the problem will more likely to be the ancilliaries, holes in intercooler hoses, intercooler, egr or maf. or the turbo vanes gummed up.

If you are familiar with VW engines then the 1st port of call is someone with Vag.com or a VAG garage, independant specialist to diagnose the fault and will cost around £40. Have a look on this forum for a specialist near you.

thanks thats exellent ill check out the possible causes.

When you start your car up and drive it for he first time in a day does it feel OK and then loose power or is it like that all the time?

If there is a power loss, can you feel it happen, say when overtaking?

Has it always been like this since you bought it or has it happenen suddenly/over time? Model, age. engine code and mileage would also be useful to ehlp work out the problem.

You should deffinatley get a diagnostic check done but a visual check to see that everything is connected Ok and nothing split is also a good idea first. If you have a MAF problem it probably wo't show up on diagnostics and I couldn't tell with y car or my wife's when they went, they were just better when fixed.

Sorry for all the quesions but it took me a while to diagnose and fox the problem I had, with Vag-Com and a bit of know how, also with the car in fron of me, trying to do it blind is a virtual impossibility !)

thank mate it did the job seems almost twice as quick, quick question does the air flow meter affect the engine if it is not pluged in

The ECU will work around the fact that the air flow meter isn't plugged in but it's not ideal. It's worth popping it off and cleaning the element inside if you know what your doing - but if not, get the part number off it and have a look on EBay as they can be bought new of there cheap enough. I think they are around £80-£90 from the dealer.

About £50 from Euro Car Parts, exchange.
