Rattling air con clutch

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have seen several posts re missing clutches and nuts from the clutch on the aircon pulley. I have a related issue but not the same.

When the aircon is switched off there is a rattling from the pulley and clutch area but when the aircon is switched on all goes quiet and the aircon works. I have had a look and all the pieces seem to be there and the nut is still in place.

Does the clutch wear? Could it be that the nut has just worked loose a bit? Is the clutch/pulley replaceable without the whole compressor?

It seems a real shame to have to replace the whole compressor and regas the system when it works fine, just the clutch is really rattly when not engaged, so much so that everyone was looking at my wife when she pulled up to the local shops in it. She is driving around with the aircon on all the time now to keep it quiet.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Jules.

Hi, mine did this for a while - and then stopped working !! found the clutch had eventually sheared off and was lying on the undertray - luckily the guy doing the regas at the time had some old spare ones and one fitted and worked fine, the nut had not come loose so the splines and thread were fine.

I think you can buy them separate new from somewhere on the web - cant remember where though.

Well it sounds promising that it may be replaceable rather than the a/c pump. If anyone can find a web link to get replacement clucthes for it I would be very very happy.

No way am I into paying many hundreds of pounds when I only paid £1200 for the car - if it comes to it can I just remove the clutch parts from the pulley which will render the aircon inoperative but also will not rattle?

Thanks again

Jules

Mine rattles a bit, but only when turned on. It's done it for the last 6 years and hasn't broken yet. Parked next to a Volvo yesterday which made exactly the same rattle. You don't hear it in the cabin, but it's quite audible from outside or with the window open.

I think that sounds like the clutch unit is failing. As usual, I'd suggest talking to an automotive aircon specialist near you.
