Can of worms?

Featured Replies

Hi,

i used to own a mark 1 vrs octavia, and am now thinking of coming back to owning an octy vrs. am thinking of buying new ... never had a new car so all very exciting (i should get out more) but there are a few things i have on my mind. and i am sure one of them will open a can of worms

i am not sure weather to go for the petrol or diesel, i like the way both drive petrol as its that bit quicker and just feels a little more fun, and diesel for the "grunt" and the feel of pulling like a train. so am after i guess a straw pole of what people think. i dont do that many miles so no real need for the diesel but with petrol and diesel about 4p a litre different round here diesel is that little bit cheaper (so keeping the tighwad inside me happy).

Also what options should i and shouldnt i bother with?

And where should i go are the dealers up for a bit of a haggle if i take along a pile of internet print outs with, possibly cheaper prices?

sorry for the endless questions

thanks Guys

Hi,

being abroad, can only say that - if I had the possibility - I would have gone for petrol, no doubt.

Notwithstanding this, I'm quite happy of my derv making machine ;)

Ciao!

age old question i think.

if your doing lots of miles then its the weasel obviously.

i have the petrol and love it , its revo st1 so the torque is instant and very high .

try both really is the best advice.

and the vrs is meant to run on super rather than regular, so the price difference between the two will be even lower

I recently bought my first diesel engined car (1.6 Octavia petrol before, now 1.9 TDi). The diesel is about 3 bhp more and at least 10mpg more :), but it pulls through roundabouts and out of turns more like a friend of mine's 150 bhp 1.8T than a petrol of similar power - the 45 bhp difference is what makes the 1.8T so much better for B road overtaking of course - similar power means similar overtaking but with less need to drop gears in the diesel.

If you like a car that doesn't drink fuel and is a relaxing cruiser when you're driving normally, but still performs when you're in the mood, the diesel would be my choice every time.

Try to drive each car for a few hours in as many different conditions as possible before deciding though. Make sure to spec cruise control too - it's made long distance driving much easier thanks to eliminating the need to constantly have to look from the road to the speedometer and back to check speed.

Do a search. This has been debated so many times...

Down here the difference would be greater. Diesel is cheaper than petrol at most forecourts down here now.

You can't be serious

In NE London/Essex the price is still about 8p more for diesel. It can't be that different in Herts, can it?

Diesel is 4p cheaper here in the Borders at £101,9 compared to unleaded at £105.9

Wow! Is this in the last couple of weeks? I haven't filled up for a week or two

Even lower?

At the moment the two fuels are pretty much equal in price with diesel cheaper at some garages!

well about equal is the lowest difference you can get;)

the 'petrol is cheaper' argument that folks have had against diesels doesnt seem to apply anymore

Round here its about 102.9 for derv and 98.9 for petrol. i take it you people out there have seen www.petrolprices.com i've used it for ages if you sign up you dont get loads of junk so its an OK site

Back to the matter in hand though.... i probably should have asked if there are any options that really are not worth getting?

And anyone any good ideas about places to get a good price? i dont mind dealing online (although i would prefere face to face stuff but money talks as they say) i have a car to part ex too, (yes i know a big factor is the price someone is willing to give me)
