12k Miles in my CR vRS

Featured Replies

I’ve now done 12k in my CR vRS since October – thought I’d share my views those with those of you who are interested…..

It’s in Pearlescent Black, 18” Zeniths, Full Climate control and no options (I did spec some but the garage messed up the order and I did not fancy waiting another 10 weeks for it!!!)

Firstly, the engine – I came to the vRS straight from a 170PD Sport Passat and was amazed by the difference between the two engines considering they have the same quoted power and torque figures….. if I am honest I was a little under whelmed initially, but prolonged exposure and a modification of my driving style has taught me to fully appreciate it and I now think it’s a vastly better engine than the PD – far more useable revs across the range…….

I’ve averaged around 44mpg in a mixture of A and B road driving and the odd long motorway trip – considering that I don’t hang around I think that is pretty amazing.

It came with Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres all round – they were fine in most conditions, though nothing special, I’ve just swapped to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric’s on the front so will be interested to see how I get on with them.

The handling is fine – I am sure if I took it on a track it would feel like a sponge, but for what I use it for it goes round the corners fine!!!!!! The traction control seems pretty well judged too, it comes in progressively and is not too nannying………

I think it looks great – I had all the usual Skoda jokes from my colleagues when it first arrived, but since then plenty have admitted that it looks pretty good….

I am well impressed with the interior and the distinct lack of squeaks and rattles – admittedly it’s no BMW / Audi inside, but it does what is needs to and is not overly plasticy …..

I’ve had not problems with the car really – and it’s still showing 7k until the service is due…….

About the only gripe I have is a rattle around 2.5k revs…. I think it’s a manifold heat-shield or similar, but as it only happens when I’m on the move it’s pretty hard to trace!!!

All in all a very happy Skoda driver :D

Good review  and interesting to hear your comparison of the PD and CR engines.

Have you found the engine has loosened up much and the MPG improved noticeably since new?

I think it's certainly loosed up a lot ..... not sure I could say that I've noticed much in the way of improved mpg though!!!

11,000 miles since January and it has averaged 52.4 mpg overall. Since it reset it is sitting at 54.4 mpg. Quite a bit of driving at very high speed and revs too, so normal driving should achieve at least these figures.

I've done 9k now and also average around 44 to 48

I have found Millers in the fuel does give it a tad more oomph

the tax renewal came today £125 for 12 months :D

I came form a 140PD so for me the extra power and useable rev range is amazing

as bob says its all about how you drive it

Have done 5000 miles with our CR since March. Loved my old PD vRS, but the CR is so much better and economy is probably +5mpg, averaging 50.

Have to agree with all said, covered 2.5K in my new CR and have noticed exactly the same thing. Yes i did have to adjust my driving style a little for the new car but the engine is so much better to drive and again a + 5MPG on the economy figures.

9000 miles since Jan. When I'm light footed I get about 46-49 mpg, when I'm in a rush I can still get 40ish mpg. Having it remapped tomorrow so will be interesting to see the difference in mpg etc.

Folks, opinons please,

I am thinking about buying a 2nd hand VRS and have a choice between CR and PD versions. I drove the PD but have yet to drive a CR. I liked the way the PD delivered its power with a bang, like my 110 but more. Does the CR engine deliver the power in a straight line or is there a sudden rush at higher revs? Thanks in advance .

It's definitely more of a straight line delivery. In fact I was initially somewhat disappointed with mine ... it felt almost 'sedate' when compared with my (very) old 110bhp pre-PD Tuning-Boxed Octy, where the power/acceleration was certainly delivered with a noticeable surge. But I now realise that the power delivery is so smooth it's deceptive and I am in fact travelling at faster speeds when accelerating than my senses indicate (other than optic sensory input from the speedo ).

I've found that, coupled with the DSG box (which is first class) my whole driving style has now been modified as a result ... feed the power in progressively rather than flooring the throttle etc etc. I'm sure my passengers are now enjoying a far more relaxed driving experience without any sacrifice in journey time.

Is the CR170 as fitted to the Octy the same engine as fitted to the 170 diesel Superb???

My wife drives a pd170 VRS Octy and i have a 170CR Superb , mine does seem to be doing a lot more mpg than hers!!

I'd have to agree with youngbaz's response......... very straight line, but goes higher up the rev range (it will rev to 5.5k, but it is very flexible / useable to 5k)......

Not the rush of the PD, but you get used to it and it as amazingly economical......:)
