Potentiometer on the way out? - 1.6 Felicia

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if you who are likely to be more versed in talking to Skodas will be able to help me out.

I've recently become the owner of a 1.6 Felicia Estate (booya) - 96k on the clock, runs great apart from one small issue. This is my guess - but please feel free to slap me in the right direction if I am barking up the wrong tree.

The potentiometer on the back on the TB makes a right racket. Whines like nobody's business. I think that the pot may be on it's way out...I can never get the car to idle steady, or rev at a constant speed. The throttle never feels progressive, either. I get to a certain point in my accelerator positioning and WOOSH - all the power comes at once.

If it is the potentiometer - can I clean it? Not enough cash for a new TB assembly here.

But yes - any input on this issue would be pretty awesome. Cheers guys!

my 1.6 has exactly the same throttle problem in that it also comes in all at once. Ill be fascinated to be given the answer to the problem! :o

I can't say I experienced this in my Felly.

Whats a Potentiometer?

I think he means the throttle position sensor.

Potentiometer is used to give relative positions of a rotation. I.e it would tell ecu how open the throttle butterfly is.

A potentiometer is another name for a rheostat or a variable resistor, which is exactly what a lot of throttle position sensors are!

Hi folks,

Since last I posted, the throttle seems to be acting increasingly erratic, and the noise from the back of the TB is getting louder, so I've decided to take the plunge and get a used TB from our good friends over at Roadside Rescue.

Just another question I'm hoping can be answered - if I fit the TB, start the car and let it be for a minute or two - will it set itself, or will I have to take it down to a garage to have the TB aligned?

I'm based in Milton Keynes, and the Pillings Skoda here informs me they 'don't do Skodas' anymore..apparently. So I'm stuck if it does need some computer-connecting-magic thing.

Anyway. Halp.

Thanks :o

Hi Trautmann,

I'm very interested to see how this goes. I've had some starting issues with my 1.6 and some very strange idling. Does yours start OK?

I recently changed the Lambda sensor after borrowing a friends fault code reader. See HERE. Didn't make a blind bit of difference!!! My first idea was the throttle body. Wish I had of stuck to it.

Anyway, please let us know how it goes :)

Should be able to re-set itself. Just disconnect the battery, turn the ignition on and leave it for a minute. Think they re-align themselves or something by doing this.

Ah, a fellow estate owner  - I read the linked thread, sounds like an interesting problem

Mine always seems to start everytime fine. If warm, it will have difficulty idling when re-started, but once driven a little, it sorts itself out. As for the buzzing on the back of the thottle body, sounds like the EXACT same thing, so if when I replace my TB it sorts itself, I'll stick it up here.

There seems to be quite a good availability of TBs on the net, so I suspect this is a common problem. Wonder how mine made it to 97k...

Gonna be a couple of weeks before I can summon the cash for the TB from the breakers, but as soon as it's fitted, results will be posted ;)

Also, philje123, I'll go with that advice - sounds like a plan :D

Cheers guys!

Hiya, any advances on this?

Cheers.

Well i did a tps reset when i disconnected the battery to do the airbag, and afterward the difference was really quite apparent. Mine had always been a bit sluggish to rev, and topped out at 90, after the tps reset it was much happier, a little rev monster and the top speed shot up to an indicated 110!!!!!! (100 on gps)

ok ok... so my engine died a week later... but that was unrelated!

Tried the reset thing but didn't make any difference to mine. It's getting a bit of a pain to start now and nearly dies when I blip the throttle quickly. If I push the throttle down slowly then it's fine....?

Found recon throttle body's on fleabay for £75 with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. Might just buy one as I need the car for Devon in a few weeks.

Well my Devon trip is getting closer and I couldn't wait for Trautmann to buy and fit his TB and tell us the outcome. So I have purchased said throttle body today. Went to Mr Jorily in the end and got a brand new for £100 instead on the re-con for £75.

Fingers crossed..... Not sure if I'll be fitting it this weekend. Bit tied up with birthdays.

Will keep you posted.

one other thing i would check if your spark plugs, mine was doing exactly the same thing as you describe, 10 quid from euro car parts and now my 1.6 runs absoluetly superbly.

Done this recently when I serviced it. Hasn't made any difference. :(

doh. well at least you know it isnt those then!

If anyone gets stuck ive got a good working throttle body in the garage that i took off the 1.6 i stripped.

Ah, what developments!

Sorry folks, I've been away for a bit working to gather the cash for said TB - but finally ordered one today. In fact, I ordered the £75 re-con from ebay, so hopefully this weekend should be the fitting date.

Sorry to be so slow, BiGRUD. Let us know how it goes with the Jorily part, I'll post on here as soon as I have results on the ebay item.

I also purchased a new coolant temp sensor (apparently on the 1600 they function both for the fuelling setup and the gauge on the dash) and a thermostat.

Indeed, fingers crossed for us both

Hi Trautmann, no worries for the delay. As I said my trip is getting closer and I really want to get this sorted. Devon is a looooooong push home for me LoL.

Can you send me a link to said sensor above?

Cheers.

Hi BiGRUD - sorry for the mis-description - I bought a tested USED temp sensor from Skospares - although they do new parts, too, so they should be able to get you whichever one you'd like

cars dismantled by Roadside Rescue for all your skospares - there's a form for requesting parts - they're fast and if in doubt, very informative on the phone.

They should be able to sort you out - my temp sensor was £8 with something silly like £4 postage.

All the best with your ever-nearing trip to Devon! :sun:

Ha ha, no worries. Just a quick question. Does said sensor you're getting go into the thermostat housing or is it the one that goes into the head by #1 cylinder?

Cheers.

Indeedy, the one I've bought is the one that goes into the front of the thermostat housing. I wasn't aware that there was a sensor in the cylinder head - I haven't looked there. Does anyone know what the sensor in the cylinder head does?

Stop. Update time.

Well, today was the day when all the parts were fitted. New throttle body made the same whine as the old one did (making me feel like a right plank) - but throttle response, idle and smoothness throughout the rev range much improved.

New stat' went in well, works fine. No problems with the masses of plastic parts, they seemed to hold okay.

HOWEVER. It turns out that I was sent the incorrect coolant temp sensor, so I'm going to leave the old one in for a bit longer whilst I try to send the wrong one back. I fitted the new one to try it, but it just made the car stall at some traffic lights, and showed the wrong temperature on the gauge >:I

Anyway. Getting there.

IT'S FIXED!!!!! :D

Recieved my brand new thermostat temperature sensor (yellow band) from Mr Jorily and it's fixed for £9.

After fitting, my throttle body stopped whistling, it started on the button, revved itself slightly and purred at 750rpm. Or is it 700rpm. Can't remember, sorry. The temp guage now sits where it should do too. It now drives like a new car and goes like the clappers. Hopefully I should see a better return on my mpg now.

Thing is I still have a brand new throttle body on it's way from Mr Jorily too. DOH!!! Might still fit that to better performance even more. :)

I like to thank everyone who's put their suggestions in and hope those that still have problems get them sorted soon.

Thanks again guys.
