Hit by a scooter

Featured Replies

Figured it might be easier sharing the pain.

Was at a T junction on friday, waiting for a left turn. As soon as I had the right of way, checked both sides and moved off. Then out of nowhere - bang on my right side and a dude goes flying over the bonnet. First thoughts - I'm in deep ****e but after a moment people started coming up to me saying it wasn't my fault. The mupet on a scooter went straight through red lights, across a pedestrian crossing and into my driver side wing/door/wheel. After kindly asking if he was alright (which he was), asked for his insurance details. Turned out the ******* didn't have insurance. I'm only covered third party fire and theft. Coppers didn't give rats **** about the fact....he didn't even have ID, just gave his details (don't know how true) and they let him walk!!

The Damage: Hole in front door (how??), wrecked front wing, no indicator and the odd play in front wheels when kicking them. Gonna have the axle checked. A dent in A pillar is also odd...

Managed to get a "new" door today. Couple of stone chips, matching color & otherwise good condition. Just need to move trim, window etc from the damaged to the new one and it should be straight swap.

Got a front wing as well. Dirt cheap but wrong color and sliiight rust here and there. Will prep & see if worth bringing to a paint shop. If not will buy a new one and have that painted. Never thought getting a panel sprayed could be so expensive. Quoted €300 today. Is there any way I could get matched paint in rattle-cans & laquer from Halfords & do a proper job myself?

Any help, opinions welcome ;)

Get more quotes, I got quoted £150 for my boot lid to have the spoiler holes welded and have the whole thing sprayed.

I'd have done what you did, then later I'd wish I put the guy's scooter in the boot and sold it to pay for the repairs.

got around 20 quotes today - all in the 250 to 300 range.

Would go for rattle-cans from Halfords if I knew the result's gonna be ok.

Also have heard that silver's hard to match. How true's that?

Re scooter - I would've had to pay someone to actually get the wreck off me (he did go in at high speed, no brakes applied)

Looks like a trip to Trayor's in Armagh !

Nasty bit a damage.

Any damage to the sill

Might be worth looking into whether you have something similar to the Motor Insurance Bureau in Ireland, over here the insurance companies pay part of everyones premium into a fund held by the MIB which (theoretically) pays out if you are hit by an uninsured driver.

sorry to hear the bad news! i work in a bodyshop, and yes, silver can be an awkward colour to match. i wouldn't attempt to spray the panels with rattle cans as the finish will be far from perfect, yes its expensive to get them done properly, but it will be worth it when its all done and looking factory fresh again!

We do indeed - MIBI :)

Only downside here that I'll have to fork out the cash myself and hopefully get the refund in around 18 months time:(

Don't trust the system - the copper showed feck all interest when I said the dude on the scooter admitted to having no insurance...that's messed up...

re silver matching - I'm gonna see how well the door matches (off a same year silver octy). Does buffing help at all? The wreck was in sunlight at a dismantlers place, color looks a bit tired...

PS! Call me stupid but: how do you quote multiple posts in 1 reply?

one more thing...

Oo, nasty. What an idiot - but good thing he wasn't seriously hurt.

There's a multi-quote button to the right of the quote button :)

Don't wanna be rude but....he kind of deserved to be hurt....running red lights nearly hitting pedestrians & causing my poor car the pain...what a @#"!

Tis a bit of a nasty ding that :(

Hope he has a few bruises to remember you by - problem is lots of these uninsured's are also banned etc :(

You OK though? Its surprising how hard something little can hit!

If you have the scooter riders details, then seek recovery of your losses via small claims court.

Reading through this thread I was thinking that someone should suggest this. Then there it is, the latest post. :D

It's certainly worth a shot and him being issued with court papers may even prompt him to settle out of court, but that's unlikely.

I have to agree, If an uninsured driver hit my baby the damage to the car and the police would be the least of his/her worries!

Feel your pain though mate thats quite a hit!

We all have to pay insurance for exactly this reason, why should someone who hasn't and therefor commited an offence be let of the hook (By the looks of things)!

Winds me up soemthing rotten!

I would persue this through the courts!

Thinking the same. I'm alright but it's the car I feel sorry for:(

I mean, how on earth did this thing manage to make a hole in the door:confused:

And a dent in the A-pillar??

Thanks, I think it's worth looking at. Might be faster than MIB (reading about people waiting well over 18 months).

Details are a bit odd tho. I mean the only things coppers got off him were dob, address, name & number. He didn't carry any ID or whatever. Having trouble to get in touch with the copper @ scene as well. Never at the station. Left details in a number of times - no reply :orb_sword

The Police will show no interest if the guy has no insurance, no ID or anything on him. The paperwork involved is unbelievable, and would still result in nothing, as all they can do is tell the guy to show his papers at the station a week later...you think he would? :rotz: you think he has any? :rotz: I'm not saying i agree with the system, far from it, but the police have so little power these days its almost scary.

And personally, I would have seen how well he worked as a speed bump...but then i wouldn't want to damage my bumper

Thinking the same....

Do you have the bikes reg plate?

If so sue the owner of the bike. They will have a duty of care and insurance and will either be the rider or will have let the cretin ride it.

Job done.

Good thinking

I'll look into that for sure

Got in touch with the ******* today, demanding money for repairs (quoted €1800 @ main dealer). Might not be what I'm gonna pay but that's the quote and he should cover it.

He got all excited and said is gonna sue me for causing him injuries. Got in touch with the officer @ the scene and was told they've reached a conclusion he was @ fault. I'll keep you all posted as the whole ordeal goes on. Should know exactly what's gonna happen by Friday or so

Keep the ideas coming :trampolin

,,,,,,

Idea - Sue the f**ker into the ground in the civil courts and insist the police take action against the driver for driving without insurance. Complain to the officers seniors if required.

That little **** deserves to go down and hard.

If you know any local alternative law enforcement officers, maybe they should pay his knees a visit too ;)

That's partially done ;)

Copper said he will be done for no insurance and (!!!) for having no licence :D

Court sounds tempting too:thumbup:

Re knees - :rolleyes::shhh:

LOL he wanted to sue you for injuries for being in the wrong!!! what a twonk!!!!

Make sure you get his address and send him the repair bill. Maybe that should teach him to ride/drive without insurance.

Address is something I do have ;)

Have been trying to call him and offer to cover the costs based on a main dealer quote (€1800)

Haven't got through yet but will keep trying. In case he refuses to pay, I'll go the small claims court / MIB route. Whichever is faster :(

He will pay, one way or the other. Don't care how but he will

I do not want to hear about him having to support the family and having no money. Should not be driving uninsured in the first place!!

PS! if you guys want a laugh - think I haven't mentioned but a short description of him goes like this: 30-year-old Romanian Nazi, on a scooter :D

Why Nazi? he had a swastika tattooed on both of his ears:rofl:
