rev limit on a 136 engine

read lots of posts about tuning 136 engines but im still confused as to what they will safely rev to :confused:

whats the definative answer please? lots and lots of revs i hope:thumbup::thumbup:

To get one to rev to much more than 6000 you need to uprate your valve springs....and there is no direct replacement on the market so you need to get something modified. Also bear in mind that its a 3 bearing crank engine running push rods! The works rally cars revved to 7500......but then their engines were built with lots of care and special parts.

Mine revs to about 6000 after which it is so harsh and vibratory its not much fun so I dont bother (I have an electronic limiter set to 6500, by which time the springs are probably bouncing!).

I wouldnt recomend reving the 136 past 6000rpm .I ran mine with sk6 cam and 40 webers and it would rev to about 8000 rpm but went bang very quickly.great when it ran but very stressed and unreliable

The valves bounce at 6200 rpm in a std 136. I was reving mine to 7200 rpm at the weekend before changing gear with a grp A kent cam which is far better than the sk5. Mine has Saab 96 valves, mini super sport dual valve springs and some machining and washers to set the installed height of the valve springs. Head is ported. The rods are new lightend items, the liners are used items bored out to 1300cc (used items are more stable) Set the above block high to the max given in the book and use extra torque on the head bolts. I use new old steel push rods and new tappets and rockers. The pistons are still cast items running 11:1 compression. Twin 40 carbs with 32 chokes for torque. Mod'ed dizzy advance. Use the 136 or convert a bosch, the felica one has the wrong curve and fly to bits at high rpm.

New timing gears and chain and a uprated oil pump, shows about 60 psi on the gauge. I use Valvoline 20/50 race oil with a larger oil cooler.

John Haugland always reported the safe limit as 7_000, beyond which, even with slipper pistons and uprated valve springs etc you start to bend pushrods. This was part of an anecdote about how he bent a pushrod in a spin on the real RAC (before it became the Wales Rally of South Wales, em GB), and bought 4 new ones in a scrappie for 80 pence!

For road use stick with the std items and get a cam that suits the rev range. Its a lot of messing about!

seen somewhere that rover sd1 valve springs also fit and are about the right strenght

how have you uprared you oil pump and are ther tappings in the block or is it a snadwich plate job

when you say convert to a bosch dizzy what do you source one from?:confused:

still working on what sort of cam is in mine , engine will be out in the next week or so to sort oil leak, well more of a slick rather than a leak,:mad: suspected crank oil seal, so i will be definately be able to see whats in there:D

Rover SD-1 Vitesse valve springs are a direct replacement, rating 170lb pressure at 28.5mm.

Ken, what engine sd1 are the valve springs from? So many to choose from?

Big clue in the word "Vitesse" I thought! It's the carbie version rather than the EFi though. As for sourceing, I'd try someplace like Rimmer Bros.

Ken, forgive me for being thick but what sort of year vitesse? I've been on rimmer bros and there are loads of choices?

<p>Bottom ends will withstand high revving, piston rings and lands wont. if your going to rev high then you also need to ensure your running less timing advance. Also don't confuse works skoda engines running at 7000 rpm with producing lumps completely different engines from the offset. </p>

<p>Me personally wouldnt bother with the 136 engine as the benifits are marginally better than the 130. And at least the 130 doesnt sound like a monkey firing a machine gun into a bathtub. </p>

My source article isn't actually dated and doesn't say, but there's another piece in the same series dated to Sept 1986, so it must be before that, and there's only 2 or 3 years possible for an SD1 Vitesse before that I think.

Oh and Skudman, the builders started with a bought Estelle 130 and reported revving out on the limitter at 120mph in 5th on the stock 3.9:1 diff.

Was the engine in the Favorit a modified version of the 136 engine? When i was at school a mate of mine was a skoda fan. He had a 120 which gave up around 6000rpm (valves bouncing and all). He replaced it with a Favorit which was happy to go to over 6500rpm quite happily from what I recall.

The Favorit engine is the 135/136 engine thats a bit **** in standard form. I am sure your friends Favorit engine has by now imploded!! The 135 was a low compression version (i.e. less power) so may handle the revs slightly better.....both 135 and 136 engines in non MPI form have decent valve springs at least!

@Hawkeracing: this was 15 years ago but the car did take the punishment. It took the revs but was not as smooth or as revvy as the Fiat Uno 45 FIRE I had at the time which was a five bearing crank and overhead cam :) He replaced it with another Favorit with singlepoint injection which was awful though. I've not heard of the 135 engine. What was that fitted to?

The 135 is exactly the same externally as the 136 and was fitted to Favorits and Felicias (and the Rapid RIC)....I doubt you or your friend would have known if you had a 135 or a 136 in the Favorit. I believe the pistons are a different profile in the 135 which lowers the compression and therefore allows the engines to survive on poor quality petrol in markets where things like 90 octane petrol were common.

Ive got new cylinders+pistons and I have installed GT cam shaft 

 

im looking for some performance springs ofcourse :P

On this subject, whats the max for normal day to day driving on a standard car - say pulling onto a motorway or using full power?
