That is the correct oil, I got some from Skoda, its called G50 gear oil SAE 75W/90 (synthetic), and the box takes 1.9 litres.

I would deffo go for the Skoda gearbox oil which is now G52, its the best and the cheapest. I tried some fuchs oil and it was hard to get into gear and notchy. I ended up changing it back to the Skoda oil and all is great again.

Cool. Thanks for the advice. Interesting that you mention about the difficulty in engaging gears with the Fuchs product and that the original spec stuff is the best. When I owned an S2000 a few years back I had some redline gear oil put into the box (was extremely expensive !) and it made the gear change really difficult, I changed back to the Honda stuff and it was fine again.

g60 now

This is one job I don't advocate doing yourself. If you do it, you'll find out why when you discover what used gear oil smells like!

i drained my gear oil last week & it does smell horrid, mind you it wasnt as bad as the army vehicles i work on,the gear oil on them really does stink & it is the only oil to make the skin on my hands & arms to itch!

Ok, I just rang local VW dealers and they quoted me £12 a litre plus vat!! Surely thats wrong..

last week i paid around 12 quid for 2 litres.

i paid £7.30p + vat last week for 2 litres,i got mine from andrew pages in york using my work trade account.:)

g60 now

Yes you are correct. Back in March I paid £10.10 inc Vat for 2 ltrs of G60 from Royce Roberts Skoda, Hull.

Someone is having a laugh at £12 a litre plus vat then. And Im trade also!

How long should this take? (and consequently, how much should I expect to pay someone to do it? ;))

it took me 30 mins to do mine, that included jacking the car up & putting it on axle stands.:)

If you find the G60 too expensive I found that millars TRX Fully Sythetic 75w90 gear oil worked very nicely in a MK I Octy TDI 110.

What sort of mileage and age does the gearbox oil need changing at?

Mines on 58k , 54 reg. Just been serviced and they havent done the gear box oil.

AFAIK the oil should last the life of the car, I don't think it is on any Skoda service schedule. I did mine @115k as it was getting notchy.

There's rarely an oil change interval recommended by the car manufacturers for any transmission. The closest I can come to a change interval for a manual is that ZF Transmissions recommend changing oil in their auto boxes every 50_000 miles (80_000 km) [found out by a mate who cleared up some transmission problems with his auto car by changing gear oil after talking to ZF].

Yeah a friends auto Mazda dried up and I had to race to get transmission fluid ASAP before the box died completely. That was at less than 100k.

My baby has trouble selecting first sometimes and particularly if I'm not at a complete standstill, so I figure what's the harm in changing the fluid? Maybe it'll help, maybe it won't. However, if it's cheap and won't hurt her - why not?
