3 dead coil packs since remap 2 weeks ago... is this normal?!

Featured Replies

I mentioned in my remap thread that on the test drive after getting the remap done one of my coil packs died. Since then 2 more have gone to the dead coil pack pile in the sky. All 4 have now been changed over so I'm hoping that is the end of that but I was just wondering if this was a common occurance?

The coil packs were the originals and the car had covered 66k over in 6 1/2 years if that makes a difference?

Whilst I've got a thread on the go can I also ask if its a case of replacing the DV if it goes or is it more a case of when it dies on a remapped car?

Thanks :)

Unlucky with the coil problem...change all 4 to the newer "R" versions

As for the DV, Forge 007 and Bailey are a common replacement, 007 myself on a remapped car..OE one does react quicker but is prone to fail on a mapped engine

Ah damn, I just replaced with the ones on VWSpares :o Are these actually a new part or simply a revision of the original?

Also its interesting to read that they are slower to react. I'm on the verge of dropping Forge an email to order a 007P but I now wonder what effect this slower reaction has? Is is simply a case of the pressure being released a fraction later when coming off the throttle?

Guy tried to sell me a remap last week and warned me that (in his experience of the 1.8T engine) I'd probably lose a couple of coil packs if I went for it. Recomended buying at least two spares and keeping them in the boot.Enough to put me off.

I had my coil packs changed under warranty for the J version prior to a Jabba remap in September 2003and have had no problems with them since. The J version has been superceded by the L then R versions. The 2 spare J versions I bought when they were as rare as the proverbial rocking horse **** are still in the glove box.

M8 you wont even notice it.... Bosch is a diaphram valve, forge is piston type and more reliable, i have a yellow spring in mine under advice from Forge and mate who co owns APS in Brackley:thumbup:

what kind of remap did you go for was it the generic or the custom what kind of bhp and fuel economy were you looking at?

If aimed at me..:) went custom rolling road map, done after Forge FMIC, Dv, Carbonio CAI,Neuspeed tip and 100cel cat with Milltek system. AMD then of Bicester Oxon did the map (Lummox used to work there) i know the guys so they took good care of mine and went into the reliability factor a little more than usual:D hence the figures

Yeah they did mention that to me, especially as I was on the originals. It was just 3 going in such a short period of time had me worrying :o

I guess it depends on whether you are happy shelling out £100 on a set of replacements if you need to. I'm not too fussed and am pleased that I got it done.

Notaclue- I went for a stage 1 generic Revo. It should be putting out about 205 bhp ish now IIRC. If I'm honest I don't care for peak figures too much. The car scrabbling around for grip from 3000 RPM in the dry in 2nd is enough to keep me on my toes :D

MPG, and remember that I'm still in "better just make sure the Revo is still working :yipee:" mode as I've only had it a couple of weeks, is actually slightly better, especially cruising at a steady 75.

My car also runs well on v-power now with none of my previous cold start issues. Not sure if thats the map or weeding out the dodgy coilpack that died instantly that caused that though :P

. im not looking at going in to the tuning in a big way id just like abit more power its taken me ages to convince her in doors to let me get it remapped but anything eles would be a nightmare to persuade her lets put it this way my options are limited lol:thumbup:

cheers for that mate ill bear that in mind what did the revo set you back/ did they just flash the ecu or did they have to take it apart ive heard of stories about shocking soldering dry joints and ecu,s that didnt fare to well with being opened up?

Revo is steep at £350+ VAT. Its just a flash over the OBD port so the ECU isn't touched. I too was going to go for a Jabba remap but I read about lots of problems with them (could just be internet talk) on the flipside I read very few Octy RS owners with complaints about the Revo so that swung it for me as did the projected power curve with its big low down gains.

OK, Forge 007P it is then, tbh I've been thinking about getting one for a while. Anyone know what spring is needed for a stage 1 map? I think the guy said that boost was now peaking at around 17 PSI?

Green spring is good for 5-15psi apparently.

Mine peaks at a little over 16psi and i'm still running the green spring... got a feeling some people with stage 2s are as well.

Cheers ethos. The 17psi figure wasn't measured on my car and I may have remembered it wrong :o Can anyone with a stage 1 Revo and boost gauge confirm?

Also a  to awesome gti who didn't give me any stick for phoning them up 30 seconds after placing my order asking them to change the colour for me as I had clicked the wrong one! :D

£92 inc delivery. Was despatched today via Royal Fail so I guess I'll get it Sat or Mon :)

I went for a Revo stage 1 level 8(whatever that means) a week ago, based upon the mods I have had done. Nearly went for a stage 2 but was told it is a little harsh on standard turbo and manifold. JKM did a cracking job.

The Revo stage 1 map replaces a Postal ECU map I had done which turned out to be the cause of my MOT failure (failed on emmisions) instead of the Blueflame cat which was first the suspect. The postal ECU caused major over fuelling at midrange, of which the O2 sensors could not correct or cope with. These are the potential issues with a cheap postal map. A Custom remap has made the car much smoother. MPG has shot up too.
