Head Unit Problems

Featured Replies

Right, i'm having some head unit trouble in my mk1 fabia and just wanted to know if anyone has had similar problems or could help.

So, about 6 months ago i replaced the standard tape player/radio with an aftermarket sony xplod head unit, just something cheap that would play cds.

After having this working for about 4 months it decided to pack up on me. I was just cruising down the motorway and my brother pressed the volume up button and it completely died. I figured that the head unit had broken.

So i took the head unit out, plugged it into my other car and it worked fine! So i tried a couple of other aftermarket head units, different makes and wiring looms/ISO leads but still no luck. I also tried all the combinations of the live and remote on the ISO adaptor looms/cables.

However, when i plugged in the stock head unit, it worked fine. (However, it does stay on when you take the keys out and lock the car, which i swear normally turns the stereo off if its running.) So ive been running that for a couple of months and had no problems. But now i want to upgrade to a hlf decent head unit and don't know what the problem is!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if the unit stays on it means the ignition live and perm live are the wrong way round. In the mk1 fabia as soon as you take the keys out the h/u will turn off so something is wrong there. Sounds like you've messed up the loom a bit but changing things round.

Yea i thought it was a problem with the permanent live cable, but i dont see how anything could have changed, as i only plugged in an iso adaptor then unplugged it. The actual cables to the back of the head unit have not been touched, and all the connectors look fine. So it must be gremlins in the fabia's wiring, which will be complicated to diagnose and fix or re-wire.

check fuse no 10 its a five amp fuse that powers the ignition feed for the stereo
