Turbo Question

Featured Replies

Another nooby question I'm afraid but....

Took a VRS out on a test drive and it was quick but I didn't really feel the turbo kick in yet it was up to 80mph in no time.

Should you feel a sudden kick or is it just smooth all the way? Never had a turbo car before.

Cheers

As standard not much of a kick, however much more repsonsive and prominent wit a remap!

OK thanks that has a at least put my mind at rest. A remap you say....

A worthy consideration I think.

Best cash spent!

The torque delivery is quite subtle on the standard vRS, so you don't get a huge shove in the back and no torque higher up the revs. The better remaps will keep this gradual torque delivery but keep the torque from tailing off quicker at high revs like it does on the standard car, so it pulls and pulls.

And how would you know that Mr Chicken :D

Yours just didn't run out of puff!

It was scary just how much the K03s was managing on that remap.

You'll have to tell us at the next meet what figures the LG was coming up with.

Yeah, driving yours i forgot how quiet the turbo was in standard form :D Sometimes i wish my car was a little more subtle so i could drive it without the constant whistle of the turbo and dumping of the dump valve.

I have had varied readings from 251 (was pleased it was over 250) to as low as 220.

That said i know i have a problem with the boost cut sometimes. It seems to be heat dependant, as in on hot days its alot worse, and on cold days it really really good. Goes to show just how badly i need to get the FMIC set up fitted :)

Garry

I still reckon the LG gives a more accurate figure if you can do the run in 4th gear - but you need to hit the limiter at 125mph to manage that

We need to organise a group rolling road day at IP once you get a FMIC on there.

Sorry, this is jumping way off topic.... I'll shut up now! :)

Is that at the wheels? how much was the map? reason I ask is that I am considering a Custom map after FMIC, TIP and possibly exhaust. Would like to go big turbo but the costs are just too much.

Its a guestimated figure produced by calculating the amount of air, fuel and boost the ecu is seeing :)

Im not sure how acurate it is tho.

I have a rolling road printout from when i had the car that shows 235bhp (see pic below), but when i was on the rollers at impossible performance recently it only gave a peak of 210 for the first run and 202 for the second. Mike and Des informed me it was the ECU cutting the boost (and therefore power) as it was all to hot so i need a FMIC to get the proper results again. Its fine to drive on the road but when hot (either weather or from driving briskly) i can feel the boost cut now. Hopefully the FMIC should cure this :)

The map on it is a Custom Code "Special". My car used to be Custom Codes demo car and they used it to develop the software they have now for Octy VRS. Im not sure on cost, would need to speak to Custom Code/JBS about that. It peaks at 25PSI and holds 18PSI till 5500 rpm.

I hope this helps.

mine peaks at 20 and holds to 14-15 but I get the odd boost cut in 2nd? normally recovers after a few seconds. I think it may be the map or a dodgy sensor somewhere.

lol gary  bit ott

Yeah, quite a range of readings :)

Was done in 3rd gear as inititly advised to do by Mr Chicken. Will try some runs in 4th and see what i get once the plate is back from my spray shop.

I had a look at the price of a custom code stage III after I had a go in Garrys car and it was something like £500

According to their web blurb the stage III was designed for if you're running a big turbo, I guess on your car Garry they just tailored it to the K03S plus the other upgrades that were on there (turbo back exhaust and inlet modifications). It is certainly quick, and it doesn't feel like it's piling on the boost and torque straight away and sacrificing torque higher up the revs.

The LG can be a bit all over the place with dyno readings, it has done 186 and 191bhp on mine (rolling roaded at 188), and 161bhp on Suzes 4x4 turbo (supposed to be 150 as standard). The guy who makes them did explain on here it works it out by dividing the mass air flow figure by a constant or something like that  I'd like to see if the bhp figs from several runs are more close together by doing it in 4th gear.

Yeah i take all bhp readings, be it from a LG or Rolling road with a pinch of salt. Its how it drives that matters :)

I have a mate with a MK4 Golf GTI (K03 turbo 150bhp model) and the LG gave 17X bhp (cant remember the exact figure). His has a Jabba stage 1 map, Piper full system and custom Cold air feed. Its never been on the rollers tho so i have no comparison.

I will do some runs in 4th once the plate is back and get some photos. Will not the time it was done so can see how lots of runs affect the bhp as it gets hot.

Take it your back from holiday now Mr Chicken. Will reluctantly give you back your LG soon :D

Garry

just remember if the maf is playing up in any way shape or form you will get some right wierd results.....

250bhp k03s with no front mount aint going to happen...

but gary your right mate its how it drives rather than pub figures but is always nice to quote lol

i had some wonderful results with the lg but again my bro inlaw was gettng 250+ turned out his maf was fecked.....

the best way is to go on 3 different rr's and take the average

Think the MAF is okay but i guess your never 100% sure till it dies fully on you. The car drives perfect, nice and smooth with instant power delivery. Only issue is this boost cut at high RPM (varies from 5000rpm - 6500rpm) but hopefully the FMIC will cure that.

I will probably end up going to Mike once thats fitted and get him to map it for me to get the optimum from it. Ah, so much to do, so little time (and money). Got a huge back of powerflex goodies arrive a moment ago so gotta fit those when i get 5 minutes :irked: my poor offside wishbone bushes got a proper soaking with all this brake fiasco i recently had, so best to change every bush on the car, lol.

Garry

Yeah iirc the LG tkes the readings from the maf and if i read mine from the Maf it would produce stupid figures. Also when taken from the Maf the air flow keeps rising all the way up to 7k rpm but we all know the turbo has run out of puff before then and bhp drops off long before too.

Fuel type can be quite significant with these cars in terms of response - need to use 97/98RON fuel to get the best even from a standard car, essential for remap to achieve what it's capable of.

I was unimpressed with mine on test drive, but all seemed healthy and there was no record of recent service so I took the chance that it maybe needed some TLC. Filled up with 97 SUL the next day and the difference was obvious in a matter of minutes.

So may be worth checking what grade of fuel is in the car. 95 won't do harm but it's likely not to produce full potential.
