help selecting a new stereo

Featured Replies

hi all, got a skoda octavia mk1 03 plate the supplied 6cd changer has broke and i want to replace the stereo. I only want a 2 speaker set up at the front. dont want an amp just something that sounds better than the factory supplied effort. Would new speakers improve the sound that much better than the factory supplied speakers or would i need to replace those as well. Got a budget of 150 pounds excluding possible speaker upgrade. Many thanks, paul

I've always been a firm believer in getting the source right first, so id advise getting a new headunit, it'll give the biggest difference, and may give you the sound you are looking for, with minimal effort.

Go round your local car audio shop with a CD of your own music, find a stereo you like the look of, that sounds good, then go on the internet and order the stereo (Car Audio Direct is my favourite).

What sort of budget have you got? and what functions are you looking for? (Tape, CD, MP3 CD, MP3 player input, ipod control, bluetooth, etc)

I've had 3 Sony Xplod head units, I'm personally a big fan and would recommend them to most.

You could try and look for a 2nd hand Becker Grand Prix. OEM looks with built in bluetooth handsfree, MP3 playback and top sound quality. The Talkaudio forum might be worth a look in the "For Sale" section for some 2nd hand bargains.

There should be plenty available within that budget but I've got a Becker in my Fabia and I'm really pleased with it. Think they go for £250 brand new.
