Columbus hu into a Fabia 1

Featured Replies

Im gather a stock pile of audio equipment to start building myself a competition car and since i bought myself a Audison Bit One i was thinking of keeping a factory headunit up front to keep the car looking stock as possible.

Since i cant find the unit for the Fabia i thought about the Columbus unit, I know i will need to do some fibre glassing to make the unit look like it's oem fit, however does anyone know if i will have any trouble with the wiring?

Mike

You would need to adapt the aerial type and convert the Fabia to the quadlock type connector.

Also there is the small issue of the Fabia not running a full CAN network.

Quadlock connector and the aerial sound easy enough to get around, what will the lack of full CAN do to the radio?

Can anyone explain why not having a full CAN network will stop me from fitting the radio?

It won't stop you fitting it, it will prevent it from working though as there won't be anyway for the columbus to pick up data from the vehicle.

You may get the Radio working, but by the time you have spent the time and money potentially needed to get the Nav working you may as well have bought an aftermarket unit that would work out of the box.

Imagine you just bought a new posh TV for the home, get it on the stand, all setup, unboxed and ready to go. Then you find there is no mains electricity to the house, you are left with something great looking and modern but with all the operational functionality of a chocolate fireguard.

Why - what data does it actually need to work?

With my ignition off, it's not picking up much (any??!) data from the CAN bus & still plays DVD's, the radio still works, HDD MP3's still play, CD music still plays & once it's picked up 4+ satellites, shows my accurate position.

Ok so he'll have no GALA signal but Tomtoms etc don't either...

If I'm missing something obvious then - Ooops! :o ...good intentions & all that!

Tried in the vRoomster, which has a partial CAN network and it won't pick up the gala signal etc etc. Basically it's then a Bolero, shows your start position but will not display you moving or track you.

I am guessing it is picking up data from the GPS receiver, ABS sensors, Gala etc and working out positioning from a pool of data rather than just the GPS antenna. TomTom just goes off the data from the GPS antenna.

It's his money .... I tried it and gave up and went back to a hard wired TomTom 940 which for the purposes of navigation only is a better, albeit not as integrated a solution.

Right, sound like i will stay with what i have got then. Most likely upgrade to a Pioneer double din at some point.
