I have seen an old style VW camper with a new style (LLxxLLL) plate and was having a discussion with my mate.

So i looked on the DVLA site and found

Are there any restrictions to the year of registration number I can choose?

  • You can make your vehicle look as old as you wish but you can not make it look newer than it actually is i.e. You cannot put a Y registration number on a T registered vehicle but you could choose any prefix from an A to a T.

So would the owner of the camper be allowed to keep his plate on his car?

I think not but my friend thinks otherwise

I think the still make them in Brazil, or did....

Do the rules apply if the vehicle is imported?

Or would it be given whatever is current at the time of import?

Im pretty sure the local Licensing office would have known what vehicle it was going onto and whether or not it was allowed on that vehicle.

More than likely.

Yeah, I agree. DVLA know exactly what the plate is going to go onto and will not send out the paperwork otherwise.:P

Unless of course Mr Campervan owner has simply ordered himself a set of "show plates" off the internet and stuck them on his van:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Ahhh!!!!! I think that's what it was!!!!

Thanks guys so i am correct in my answer and this is a "new" old car!!! Awesome!!!

I had a similar moment of confusion when I saw what appeared to be a Mk1 Golf on a modern format plate.

It turned out to have been a CitiGolf imported from South Africa.
